Can AI become a person?
We’re getting remarkably good at building machines that can talk, reason, solve problems, and sometimes behave in ways that seem surprisingly human.
But appearing intelligent and being conscious are two very different things.
In this episode of Beneath the Obvious, Rick Hoppe sits down with Dr. Tom McClelland of the University of Cambridge to explore one of the strangest questions created by artificial intelligence:
How would we know if there were actually someone in there?
The conversation moves beyond whether AI can pass tests or imitate human behavior and into the much harder territory of consciousness itself. What evidence would count? Are we too quick to anthropomorphize machines, or could we make the opposite mistake and fail to recognize a genuinely new kind of mind?
And perhaps most importantly: Do we understand human consciousness well enough to recognize consciousness somewhere else?
McClelland and Hoppe explore the difference between intelligence and consciousness, the problem of knowing whether another mind exists, what current AI can and cannot tell us, and how uncertain our view of the future really is.
No hype. No science-fiction predictions presented as fact. Just a serious conversation about a question we may eventually have to answer.
Can AI become people?
Or are we looking at something entirely different?
Are we looking at a new life form, or at a new definition of what it means to be alive?
