What if they’re right this time?
Every generation seems to meet a new technology with the same fear: This one is going to replace us.
Machines were going to replace workers. Television was going to destroy conversation. Computers were going to eliminate jobs. The internet was going to change everything.
Sometimes the predictions were wrong. Sometimes they were right, just not in the way anyone expected.
Now it’s artificial intelligence.
So instead of trying to predict the future, I went looking backward.
What does history actually tell us about technological disruption, and what can’t it tell us about AI?
