Three years after a federal marshal at the road south of Silas gave him an order he did not yet understand, Eli Creed is still on the road.
He rides with Frank—the only man he trusts to read the country the way he reads it. With Percy and Jesse, working the freight roads east of the territory. With a boy they call Twigs who has never quite grown into the road and never quite stopped trying to. The federal court at Cheyenne has stopped sending marshals. The freight company has stopped sending bounty men. The country has settled into a kind of quiet that should mean Eli is safe.
Then Lane comes up.
A deputy out of the basin north of Two Pines, Lane has been reading the same papers Eli once rode into. He has not stopped reading them. The wound he lays down on a rise above the basin will travel longer than the bullet did.
Frank rides with Eli longer than the rest. But Frank has a country south past the freight road that has been waiting for him, and the road has been asking him to read it for two years now.
When Frank stops, the road keeps going.
