The world beyond the Earth is not the boundless hunting ground of legend. It’s a tiny bowl of ancient trees, a frozen ditch, and a thin, dangerous Human Path. For one young fox cub, the thrill of first freedom quickly gives way to the gnawing ache of hunger and the stubborn prickle of pride.
He stalks the familiar glade, seeking sustenance where only whispers of larger prey exist. An old beech with a lightning scar watches over a dead rook, a snapped twig by the path hints at recent presence, and Hollow the tawny owl offers cryptic, unhelpful advice from its cavity. Every scent, every shadow, holds a promise or a threat.
His mother’s single, unexplained rule of “after the loud ones, not before” echoes in his ears as boots pass by, leaving only the tantalising scent of a dropped glove and the fleeting sight of human ankles. The path, forbidden and alluring, calls to him, a line he must not cross.
With an empty stomach and the weight of his own inexperience, the cub faces a stark choice: obey the unseen boundaries or risk everything for a taste of the forbidden. What will it take for a solitary cub to truly understand the unforgiving rules of his small, harsh world?
