October 1997. Luna is babysitting for the first time at the Harlan house on Old Miner Road, a gravel lane that dead-ends at the tree line. The parents leave at 8:47 PM. The girl, Emma, is six and draws well in crayon. Luna reads her a story, tucks her in by 9:15. At 10 PM, she hears a thump from the back yard. She looks out the kitchen window and sees the lid of the old well is lying on the grass. She did not hear the scrape of iron on stone. She goes outside, flashlight in hand. The well is deep—she cannot see the bottom. But she can hear someone breathing. And then a voice, a child's voice, asks if she can come out now. Luna runs inside, locks the door, and tells herself it was nothing. At 11:30, she checks on Emma. Emma is sitting up in bed, staring at the wall. She says, 'The girl in the well says you were mean.' Luna does not babysit again.
