When your child is struggling with their mental health, it can feel frightening, confusing, and overwhelming. You want to help, but you may not always know what to say, what to do, or how to support them without losing yourself in the process. This programme was created to guide you through that journey — calmly, clearly, and without judgement. Helping Your Child Through Mental Health Challenges is an eight-module audio programme designed to support parents and carers who want to understand their child’s struggles and build confidence in how to respond. Each module is narrated in a clear, compassionate, and practical way, giving you space to reflect, learn, and make sense of what’s happening at home. Across the programme, you’ll explore: • Your own emotional experience and why your feelings matter in this process. • Sustainable self-care, boundaries, and ways to prevent burnout. • How to communicate effectively when your child is withdrawn, anxious, or overwhelmed. • Setting realistic expectations that support your child without adding pressure. • Focusing on strengths, rebuilding connection, and restoring trust. • Supporting growing independence, even when it feels difficult to let go. • How to stay present when your child stops engaging, and when to seek additional help. • Moving forward together, with confidence, clarity, and a renewed sense of direction. This programme doesn’t offer quick fixes or unrealistic promises. Instead, it gives you steady, practical guidance rooted in real experience — helping you feel more grounded and prepared as you support your child through their most challenging moments. Start with the first module and take it one step at a time — at your pace, in your own time.© 2026 - East London NHS Foundation Trust

  • Module 8: Moving Forward Together
    Jun 19 2026

Module 8 brings the whole programme together and looks at what comes next — for you, your child, and your relationship. By this point, you’ve understood your own emotional landscape, strengthened communication, set realistic boundaries, and supported your child through difficult moments. This final module focuses on sustaining that progress while preparing for the future.

We explore how to look after yourself in the long term, how to recognise and prevent burnout, and how to maintain a sense of balance even when challenges continue. You’ll learn how to reconnect with parts of yourself that may have been lost in the stress of supporting your child, and how to build a support system that keeps you steady.

We also look at strengthening your relationship beyond the struggles — rediscovering moments of connection, spending time together without an agenda, and seeing your child as more than their difficulties. Finally, we talk about helping them move toward greater independence, what to expect as they grow, and how to stay connected without taking over.

By the end of this module, you’ll have a clearer sense of direction, renewed confidence in your role as a parent, and a foundation you and your child can build on moving forward.

  • Module 7: When They Stop Engaging
    Jun 19 2026

Module 7 addresses a moment that can leave parents feeling helpless and frightened: when your child completely withdraws. Maybe they stop talking, avoid eye contact, stay in their room, or disconnect from everything around them. It’s easy to assume they don’t care, don’t want support, or are shutting you out on purpose — but withdrawal is often a sign of overwhelm, not rejection.

In this module, we explore what’s really happening when adolescents disengage, why withdrawal can be a coping strategy, and how to tell the difference between needing space and shutting down completely. You’ll learn how to stay connected without pushing too hard, how to offer support without demanding conversation, and how small gestures can mean far more than big, emotionally heavy talks.

We also look at gentle ways to encourage re-engagement, what “small wins” actually look like in these moments, and the signs that withdrawal may have crossed into crisis and needs a more urgent response. You’ll hear practical, steady guidance on how to step in without breaking trust.

By the end of this module, you’ll feel clearer, calmer, and more confident in how to stay present for your child — even when they seem unreachable.

  • Module 6: Supporting Independence
    Jun 19 2026

Module 6 explores a challenge that almost every parent of an adolescent faces — how to encourage independence without stepping back too far, too soon. When your child is struggling, it’s natural to want to protect them, step in quickly, or take over when things feel overwhelming. But long-term recovery depends on them gradually taking more ownership of their own life.

In this module, we talk about why independence matters for a young person’s mental health, and how well-intentioned helping can sometimes slip into doing too much. You’ll learn how to support your child in a way that feels safe for both of you — with small steps, clear boundaries, and reassurance that you’re still there whenever they need you.

We explore practical ways to let them take the lead, how to manage your own anxiety about “letting go,” and what to do when they avoid responsibility or push back against becoming more independent. This isn’t about forcing them into adult decisions — it’s about creating steady, manageable opportunities for growth.

By the end of this module, you’ll feel clearer about how to balance support with autonomy, helping your child build confidence while knowing you’re still firmly in their corner.
