The Commentary Track is a series of conversations exploring the making of independent micro-budget short films in West Tennessee. A spiritual cousin to the commentary tracks traditionally found on DVDs, these conversations between cinematographer R. Alan Ingalls and his collaborators explore the stories behind each project, forming an oral history of the projects, the process, and the lessons learned along the way. These conversations aren’t just about how the films were made. They’re about what the films mean to the people who made them.R. Alan Ingalls

  • Needs Salt | A Conversation with Daniel Hooper
    Jun 13 2026

Needs Salt began with a simple question: what would happen if two people carried on an entire conversation without realizing the audience had already figured out the punchline? Daniel Hooper traces the film’s origins back to a decades-old writing exercise, discussing how an idea built around questions, misunderstandings, and oblivious characters eventually became a short comedy about a date gone very, very wrong.

Along the way, the conversation explores adapting a coworking space into a film set, the practical realities of recording clean dialogue on a micro-budget, and the casting of two young actors whose chemistry helped bring the story to life. It’s a candid look at the creative decisions, technical challenges, and happy discoveries that shaped the finished film.

  • Prayer Requests 3 | A Conversation with Daniel Hooper
    Jun 13 2026

Prayer Requests 3 is a short film about Wednesday night Bible study spiraling into gossip, grape juice-fueled mayhem, and awkward confessions as six outspoken women turn chaos into connection by getting honest with God… and each other.

It continues a series that began with a simple idea: show church people as they really are... flawed, funny, well-meaning, and deeply human. Daniel Hooper reflects on the evolution of the Prayer Requests films, the inspiration behind this latest installment, and the process of building a cast from local theater productions throughout West Tennessee.

The conversation explores the realities of independent filmmaking on a small scale, from juggling schedules, last-minute casting changes, and limited resources to finding unexpected moments of comedy and authenticity once the cameras start rolling. Along the way, it touches on collaboration, world-building across multiple films, memorable performances, and the relationships that have formed through years of creating projects together.

More than anything, it’s a reflection on why these films are made in the first place... to tell stories, bring people together, leave something behind for future generations, and create work that audiences can see themselves in long after the cameras stop rolling.

  • The Commentary Track | Origin Story
    Jun 13 2026

The Commentary Track was never intended to be a podcast.

What began as source material for a pair of behind-the-scenes videos eventually grew into a series of conversations exploring the making of independent micro-budget films in West Tennessee. Here’s how a filmmaking process accidentally produced a podcast.

While creating behind-the-scenes videos for Prayer Requests 3 and Without This Ring, R. Alan Ingalls sat down with writer/director Daniel Hooper to record a pair of conversations, hoping to pull a few useful soundbites for the final edits.

What followed was the realization that these discussions deserved to exist in their entirety. Inspired less by podcasting and more by the commentary tracks traditionally found on DVDs, The Commentary Track became a growing archive of stories, lessons, challenges, and reflections from the people behind the films.
