Spring, 1943. When Livvy Hampton receives her orders for war work, she imagines she'll be sent to a munitions factory or salvage yard. The last thing she expects is to be supporting those making Red Cross parcels as part of Section X, where packages are secretly adapted with tools to help prisoners of war escape Germany.
When she gets to her lodgings at Bowland House, she soon meets fellow Red Cross workers Rosalind Rushton and Dulcie Grant, and the three of them become firm friends.
Soon Livvy meets Dr Jonah Kemble, who works to create devices for the Red Cross boxes. Jonah brings her to life in a way that she could never have imagined. But as they grow closer, Livvy realises she will have to make a decision about whether to tell Jonah the truth of how she came to be at Bowland House…
