She finds a rusted sedan half-swallowed by kudzu, a faded photograph of a woman who might be the same one, and a trail of footprints that end at a cellar door bolted from the outside. Inside, the air is wrong: dry when it should be damp, cool when the sun is high. She calls out for anyone — for Caleb, for the woman — and hears a child's voice whisper back through the dark.
