 In this episode, we explore the ancient Chedi kingdom of Kalinga (modern Odisha) and its most powerful ruler, Kharavela. Around the 1st century BCE, Kharavela revived Kalinga after centuries of Mauryan domination, launching campaigns that terrified Magadha and the Shungas. We decode the Hathigumpha inscription carved into Udayagiri hills—a rare record of his conquests, from bringing back the Jain Jina statue stolen by the Nandas to invading the Pandya kingdom in the far south.
