Good evening! I'm Aaron Jolly. And welcome to the Rhode Island Weather Podcast for Sunday, February 22nd. Folks, I'm not going to sugarcoat this. A blockbuster blizzard is bearing down on Rhode Island tonight. And it's going to be one for the history books. The National Weather Service is calling it extreme to destructive. They're not exaggerating. Right now you're seeing 34 degrees under gray skies. Feels calm. Almost peaceful. That changes fast. Light snow starts around 5 PM. Don't let it fool you. That's just the opening act. By 7 PM, this storm explodes. Here's what you need to brace for. Over in Providence, heavy snow and blowing snow take hold by 10 PM. Winds crank to 29 miles an hour, gusting near 46. You're looking at 9 to 13 inches by dawn. Visibility drops to almost nothing. Down along Narragansett Bay, it's even worse. Winds hit 37 miles an hour with gusts screaming to 54. Snow piles to 10 to 14 inches. Thundersnow is possible. Lightning and snow at the same time. That's how angry this storm gets. Monday is the peak. Additional snow pushes totals higher with gusts reaching 60 miles an hour. Trees come down. Power lines come down. Travel becomes impossible. Coastal flooding threatens around 2 AM Monday with storm surges of 2 to 3 feet. If you're near the shore, move inland tonight. Monday night, temperatures plummet to 17 degrees near the bay and 20 degrees in Providence. Looking beyond the blizzard, Tuesday brings sunshine but brutal cold. Highs barely crack the low 30s. Lows near 11 degrees. Frostbite territory. Wednesday sneaks in some light snow and rain near 39 degrees. Thursday and Friday slowly climb into the low 40s with a rain and snow mix lingering. Saturday finally delivers sunshine and 44 degrees. You'll want to throw a parade. Charge every device you own tonight. Fill your bathtub with water. Have blankets and a backup heat source ready. This isn't a drill. That's your forecast — we'll be back tomorrow. Take care. And please stay put tonight.
