Good afternoon! I'm Aaron Jolly. And welcome to the Rhode Island Weather Podcast. It's Sunday, February 22nd. Folks, I'm not going to sugarcoat this. A historic blizzard is heading straight for Rhode Island tonight. And it could rank among the top five snowstorms Providence has ever seen. We're talking 18 to 25 inches statewide. This is the real deal. Right now you're enjoying a deceptively calm 37 degrees in Providence. Soak that in. By tonight, everything changes. Snow starts falling along the coast around 7 PM. Inland areas see it by 8. Then between 11 PM and 11 AM Monday, this storm detonates. Snowfall rates hit 2 to 4 inches per hour. Winds scream to 60, even 70 miles an hour. Whiteout conditions. The kind of storm where you literally can't see your mailbox. Providence crashes to 27 degrees tonight with 10 to 14 inches piling up. Wind gusts hit 55 miles an hour. By 4 AM, wind chills plunge to minus 15. That's frostbite territory in minutes. Down along Narragansett Bay, it's even wilder. Seven to 11 inches of snow, but gusts reach 60 miles an hour by Monday morning. Tonight's high tide at 11:38 PM brings 3 to 4 feet of storm surge. Low lying areas from Warwick to Newport face moderate coastal flooding. Travel becomes impossible tonight. Not difficult. Impossible. Roads will be buried. Power outages are likely when those hurricane force winds snap trees and down lines. Grab flashlights, charge everything. And fill your bathtub with water now. This storm is undergoing bombogenesis. By Monday morning, it could be one of the strongest systems ever recorded near New England. Monday dumps another 6 to 10 inches with gusts still over 50 miles an hour. Tuesday we dig out under sunny skies, but lows near 12 degrees make it brutal work. Wednesday and Thursday bring light snow chances, but nothing remotely close to this monster. Check on your neighbors tonight. Seriously. Especially anyone living alone. That's your forecast — we'll be back tomorrow. Take care, everyone.
