🎧 Meditation & Freediving: Training the Mind Like a Muscle - Why meditate?
And above all, why meditate when you practice freediving—whether in depth or static?
In this episode, I share how meditation became, for me, a true form of mental training, comparable to a strength-training session… but for the mind. A way to build “mental mass” in concentration, a powerful tool to be more present, calmer, more grounded—both in the water and in everyday life.
I explain how, in just a few months of practice, meditation profoundly transformed my dives:
better awareness of tension and muscular release, a drastic increase in sensitivity, finer corrections of posture, equalization, body positioning… all the way to improving what a PE teacher might call aquatic proprioception. Today, I read my body far more clearly within the fluid.
Beyond performance, meditation also helps me dissolve the notion of time, reduce mental chatter—both positive and negative—that consumes oxygen, and access a state of inner calm more quickly. A precious asset, especially for hyperactive personalities, both physical and mental… the famous ADHD types.
I also share my very honest relationship with meditation: the difficult beginnings, the irritation, the feeling of being out of sync, then the breakthrough—during a warm-up agachon at 15 meters, suspended in the water like an astronaut. That’s where I truly understood the value of this practice: becoming a better freediver, and probably a better person.
At the end of the episode, I invite you to put it into practice with a guided meditation specially designed for freediving, based on a continuous body scan to develop relaxation, self-awareness, and presence.
An episode to listen to in stillness… before entering the water, or simply to breathe.
