American football — especially at the professional level in the NFL — has always been a sport rich with tradition, personality, and physical performance. For the majority of its long history, however, the sport operated on the basis of intuition, experience, and subjective judgment. Coaches read opponents' tendencies, scouts assessed player talent on instinct and observation, and fans celebrated the spectacle without ever seeing the underlying forces that drove success. That began to change in earnest in the late 20th century and accelerated rapidly into the 21st century, as data, computing power, and advanced analytics began to transform football into a deeply quantified sport.
