Description
A New York Times bestselling Biblical scholar reveals why our popular understanding of the Apocalypse is all wrong—and why that matters.
You’ll find nearly everything the Bible has to say about the end in the Book of Revelation: a mystifying prophecy filled with bizarre symbolism, violent imagery, mangled syntax, confounding contradictions, and very firm ideas about the horrors that await us all. But whether you understand the book as a literal description of what will soon come to pass, interpret it as a metaphorical expression of hope for those suffering now, or only recognize its highlights from pop culture, what you think Revelation reveals…is almost certainly wrong.
In Armageddon, acclaimed New Testament authority Bart D. Ehrman delves into the most misunderstood—and possibly the most dangerous—book of the Bible, exploring the horrifying social and political consequences of expecting an imminent apocalypse and offering a fascinating tour through three millennia of Judeo-Christian thinking about how our world will end. By turns hilarious, moving, troubling, and provocative, Armageddon presents inspiring insights into how to live our lives in the face of an uncertain future and reveals what the Bible really says about the end.
Commentaires
“Well-argued [and] certain-to-be-controversial.... Revelation is too significant to ignore and too important to be improperly read.”—Kirkus Reviews
“Ehrman is always highly readable... posing thought-provoking questions about what readers believe and how those beliefs affect their actions. Lots to ponder here.”—Booklist

The best explanation I have heard in my 70 years on Revelations
Like Dr. Ehrman, I was once an evangelical. So, his references to evangelical eschatology were precisely in line with what I was taught during my teens and early twenties. After university I attended a conservative, evangelical theological seminary for two years. It was during my seminary studies that the logic behind that theological system began to unravel for me. To my family’s horror, I left evangelical Christianity altogether but not my fervent belief in God as presented by Jesus. I chose to became Episcopalian and lean toward Christian Mysticism. I had always been troubled by Revelations and its bazaar imagery and so, for forty years, I have dealt with The Book of Revelations by ignoring it.
This book makes brilliant sense to me. I highly recommend Dr. Ehrman’s scholarly presentation of this subject. I find it refreshing, invigorating and am so glad to have read it.

An insightful analysis of Revelation
I was reared as an evangelical, but am now attend a mainline church. My switch came from reading the Bible frequently and thoroughly. One thing that doing so did was to make me realize that the end times teachings I grew up with were not consistent with what I was reading. In this book, Dr. Ehrman has done the best job of exposing those problems and the inconsistencies of the Jesus of Revelation with the Jesus of the Gospels that I have ever read. Kudos!

80% is the same as his other books
At this point I’ve read over half a dozen books by the author and have come to the realization that he’s ACTUALLY only written 2-3 books and keeps recycling the material, with a few extra tidbits thrown in, to create all others. The only thing new in this book to me, having read his others, is the extra commentary and history of how Evangelicals view Revelation, which I could do without.
Tip-read ONE Bart book on the overall topic you want and skip the other specific books. You’ll have all the important information and will save time and money.

Excellent Dive into the Most Misunderstood Part of the Bible
Many of his earlier books touched lightly upon this topic, but in this book he does a deep dive into the subject. Excellent job. Good information to have when two well dressed people knock on your door to try and talk about it!!

Extremely thoughtful and unbiased
Wonderful analysis written in accessible language. Unbiased and well researched. I’d recommend to anyone. Might upset literalists but only because it forces one to confront everything they were taught about Revelations—not through preaching or persuasion but by well laid research.

Thought provoking; probably not perfect…
Well researched and interesting thoughts, but probably not a perfect interpretation of revelations. A good read/listen if you’re interested in learning more about different perspectives of revelation.

One of Ehrman’s best.
A rational, unbiased and clear analysis of the last book in the Bible. I didn’t feel that I was being preached to or talked down to. Highly recommended.

Hard to argue with
This book never feels like it has a bias, just analysis. It would be nice if all discussions could be this well researched and reasoned.

Excellent Scholarly Take on a Widely Misunderstood Text
As always, Dr. Ehrman provides an easily readable but high-quality discussion of the critical scholarship of a biblical text. This was an excellent and enlightening discussion of the apocalypse genre and the revelation of John of Patmos. Highly recommend.

What Bart Ehrman really says about the end
This book certainly makes some good points. I don’t believe it is up to the level of previous books by Dr. Ehrman. I always expect an interjection of Dr. Ehrman’s liberalism and he certainly did not fail here. Perhaps the book should be more appropriately titled what Bart Ehrman really says about the end. Beginning the book with chastisement of those who hold apocalyptic views is a bit of a cheap shot to me and, perhaps, set the wrong tone for the book.
