Narrator Nigel Gore brings out the humor of Henry James's novella An International Episode, a deceptively light comedy of manners that cuts to the heart of class, nationality, and the quiet exercise of social power — themes that resonate with striking urgency today.

The story follows two young Englishmen, Lord Lambeth and Percy Beaumont, who visit America and are charmed by the open, democratic warmth of their hosts, particularly the Westgate family and the vivacious Bessie Alden. The Americans receive the Englishmen with genuine enthusiasm, unbothered by rank or title. When the tables turn and the Americans visit England, however, they encounter a social architecture designed to exclude, diminish, and remind them of their place. Bessie, intelligent and romantically idealistic, finds herself quietly but systematically frozen out by Lord Lambeth's mother and sister, aristocratic women who regard an American match as a contamination of bloodline and status. Lord Lambeth, weak-willed beneath his amiable surface, proves unable — or unwilling — to resist the gravitational pull of his class. In a quietly devastating conclusion, Bessie refuses his proposal not out of indifference, but out of pride and clear-eyed dignity. She will not be a trophy accepted under sufferance.
