Forced to flee, Lydia and eight-year-old Luca soon find themselves miles and worlds away from their comfortable middle-class existence. The first step is to get to a border such as Tijuana, Nogales or El Paso. The travel is extremely dangerous since the migrants have to jump on freight trains and get on top. The second step is to find a reliable “coyote “ that will guide them into the US, avoiding US border patrol and their sophisticated surveillance system.
In this novel, we follow the adventures of Lydia and her son from Acalpuco to Tucson, as well as other characters that will cross from Nogales through the Sonoran desert. The trip is particularly dangerous in the spring and summer because of the heat,
At least 100 migrants died each year in the the 2000-2014 period when I lived in Tucson.
The author has clearly researched the topic and perhaps walked through the desert herself.
There are minor inaccuracies in pronunciations (I.e. for the “javalinas”, wild boars extremely common in Southern Arizona.)
Nevertheless, this book is fascinating, well written and worth reading.
