Humanity has colonized the planets - interstellar travel is still beyond our reach, but the solar system has become a dense network of colonies. But there are tensions - the mineral-rich outer planets resent their dependence on Earth and Mars and the political and military clout they wield over the Belt and beyond. Now, when Captain Jim Holden's ice miner stumbles across a derelict, abandoned ship, he uncovers a secret that threatens to throw the entire system into war.

Description
Four hundred years from now mankind is strung out across a region of interstellar space inherited from an ancient civilization discovered on Mars. The colonies are linked together by the occasional sublight colony ship voyages and hyperspatial data-casting. Human consciousness is digitally freighted between the stars and downloaded into bodies as a matter of course.
But some things never change. So when ex-envoy, now-convict Takeshi Kovacs has his consciousness and skills downloaded into the body of a nicotine-addicted ex-thug and presented with a catch-22 offer, he really shouldn't be surprised. Contracted by a billionaire to discover who murdered his last body, Kovacs is drawn into a terrifying conspiracy that stretches across known space and to the very top of society. Read by Todd McLaren.

Smooth book - the recording, not so much
Marvelous book - smooth blend of the sci-fi and detective elements which is really cool. Even 400 years out there's still femme fatale, a criminal underbelly hidden in the darkest corners of the city and a corrupt elite preying on the weak.
The performance was all right but the quality of the recording was lackluster. Sometimes you can hear background noise and the push of the record-button.

Great audiobook, some distracting mistakes
I don't know whether it was misreading or some typos in the original source material, but the narrator says "yazuka" once, before saying the correct "yakuza" later in the book. Near the end he also says "casual link" where only "causal link" would make sense in the context. I found these mistakes distracting from an otherwise compelling story and voice performance.

Slow starting book with an action packed ending
If you are a patient listener, are good at remembering names, and like sci-fi this is a book for you!
Voicing might seem a little dull at times, but actually the choice of voicing gives the book it's own charm.
For me the 3/5 is a good solid score, that is entertaining above average, but still lacks a little in voice acting. The books biggest difficulty are the many characters you are introduces to, after hearing all the book, I got them correct placed, but it confused me a lot in the first 75% of the book.

Sound is pretty bad on this one.
Sound is really bad on this one. Especially voice acting part between characters.. Very muffled.
Overall a good cyberpunk story, very different from the tv show.
Sex scenes were too long and pornographic for my taste. I mean... Nearly 20 minutes at one point.

Thank God for RK Morgan A CyberPunkFuturist.
I own all five of his books, in print, audio & video.
Thank God for Morgan, the sci-fi/CyberPunk futures he gives you in his works maybe a glimpse of what we have in store in the coming years.
Morgan is one of my favourite writers, he has taken the time to flesh out his characters and Takeshi Kovac is a creation like no other, a one time U.N. Envoy, Merc for hire, general Hard-Man and problem solver.
Morgan writes full fuelled boys own rip your fucking head off stories, in worlds created and as fully populated as you can witness out your own front door.
His works are dense, considered, controlled and as clear as mud but once you get hooked you just go with it
Be warned but he is addictive.

Rambling about nothing.
Cringe inducing sex scenes. Overly flowery writing. Some chapters ramble about literally nothing. Steer clear.

Great premise. Too long
The premise and scifi are engaging and entertaining. The blurring between reality, virtual reality and the potential for the human soul to be converted into software is exactly the reason why I am a scifi fan. But this book is too long. Long passages that added little to the story. By the end I did not care how it resolved I struggled to finish. Performance of the actor is very compelling. They capture the tone and voice of each character.
Punchline - good story in need of an editor

well I don't say this very often, but I actually liked the TV series better than the book. somehow the book is just a little bit too fast it doesn't develop the characters as nicely.

Bad production
Was wäre für andere Hörer sonst noch hilfreich zu wissen, um das Hörbuch richtig einschätzen zu können?
One star removed for replacing the (very good) reader from the first two books. This is very annoying in a trilogy.
One star removed for the editor due to the wrong pronunciation of the main characters last name (especially considering that this has been a point made repeatedly in Altered Carbon).
Two stars removed for bad audio design. The publishers try to use effects to spice up this production was a huge misfire for me. The introduction almost hurt to listen to.
Very good story but bad execution. Probably will not even finish this.
Shame, the first two audio books were very good.

Truly amazing
This must definitely be one of the best books I have read in the past five years. Richard Morgan managed to create a world which is so dense and so fascinating that one can’t help but be dazzled and terrified at the same time by his dystopian future. It is interesting to speculate where he got his inspiration from. No doubt from modern day political, economic, military, social and philosophical problems. Easy to read/to listen to. An absolute page turner! It is good that he has written to more books. Also to be recommended.

Story good, performance good, production meh
There should have been longer pauses of silence between scenes. These just are way too short. Sometimes it takes you half a sentence to realize, that you are now in a completely different scene.

Love the book/schow
I wanted to read/hear the books after watching the netflix show. I love it as much as I enjoyed the show but the story sometimes jumps to a side story (a dream, flashback, etc.) so abruptly that you don’t actually realize it for a couple of seconds and it really throws you off the story cause you sit there wondering „wait whats happening?!“. Overall still recommend!

Best Narrator, but worst audio quality I have ever heard
The narrator is the best you could wish for which for. Especially for this dark and deep story. He managed to give every character its own facette by modulating his voice in a real artistic way.
The audio quality however is profoundly bad. It was not mixed professionally. Especially the lack of treble and the bass boost make the narrator very hard to understand. I can also constantly hear cars passing by the recording studio. Why is the sound engineering of such a popular audio book left to semi professionals? There must have been enough budget! Quite disappointing...
