À propos de ce contenu audio

The critically acclaimed author of Alien: The Cold Forge takes listeners to a rogue colony where terror lurks in the tunnels of an abandoned Weyland-Yutani complex.

“Shy” Hunt and the tech team from McAllen Integrations thought they’d have an easy job - set up environmental systems for the brand new Hasanova Data Solutions colony, built on the abandoned ruins of a complex known as “Charybdis”. There are just two problems: The colony belongs to the Iranian state, so diplomacy is strained at best, and the complex is located above a series of hidden caves that contain deadly secrets. When a bizarre ship lands on a nearby island, one of the workers is attacked by a taloned creature, and trust evaporates between the Iranians and Americans. The McAllen Integrations crew is imprisoned, accused as spies, but manages to send out a distress signal - to the Colonial Marines.

In think novels set in the Alien universe regularly follow a set pattern: exposition, discovery, horror, fight for life. The pace usually switches gears with the sense of dread.

But Into Charybdis unfortunately did not connect with me. The writing style, which is good on its own, did not translate the sense of urgency that I associate to being in the presence of Aliens. I also usually enjoy multiple characters and parallel plots, but here the story rhythms were not timed in a way that helped me follow the overall plot.
In short, not all books resonate with everyone, and this one doesn’t with me.

The performance is clear, different tones and accents are used for the multiple characters, but I felt it was monotone in places. During some action and tense moments especially, I felt the characters didn’t sound as stressed as they should be.

I’m sorry I didn’t like this whole experience, because the author clearly likes the subject, but this is not an Alien novel for me.

The style and performance didn’t connect with me as Alien material
