This is a dark fantasy romance that will shake you to your core in the best way. Some people say that Alchemised is not a romantasy. I disagree! For me it’s a romantasy with 70 % plot and 30 % love story.

I will not put any more tropes on this, because I think it would take away the story. Just believe me when I tell you that you really want to read this. There is everything in there we want in a great romantasy. 🥰

This is a 1000 something pages large book, the audiobook is around 36 hours long, and I enjoyed every minute of it. It is slow paced at some points, but there is always something happening to keep you hooked.

Everybody kept saying “it’s so dark” and “check the trigger warnings”, so I was kinda afraid to read this book. I’m not very sensitive to anything brutal described on pages, so I didn’t. 😂 And I am happy about that, because everything that happened took me by surprise and made this book an absolute masterpiece for me.

I loved the writing style. The whole story may seem a bit confusing at the beginning, but don’t let that discourage you! Accept the fact that you don’t know what is meant by some terms, you’ll start to understand as the book continues.

I also really liked the magic system, the amazingly built world (though dark and brutal), the backstory behind the war between the alchemists and the necromancers, the twists and turns. Helena is a strong and selfless FMC and there definitely is character development I can’t talk about without giving spoilers.

The narrator of the audiobook did an amazing job. I enjoyed her performance so much!

This story will live rent free in my head for years, so I’d highly recommend reading it! ❤️

I am 10 hours in, and I don't think I am going to finish this book. Some reviews led me to believe that the book was something it wasn't (someone evoked Lord of the Rings and The Wheel of Time; press reviews indicated a Gothic tone, a sense of claustrophobia, and that this novel might become a modern classic). I expected something a bit more artistic or psychological.

For me, this is a young adult novel (akin to A Court of Thorns and Roses) with original world building and... a lot of tropes that I don't like.
Since I was not the target audience, I rated it 4/5.

This book may not be for you if:
- You are drawn to more classical fantasy
- You dislike unhealthy/angsty relationship dynamics between the MMC and FMC
- You dislike breathy, raspy narration (voice acting)
- You don't like fantasy where romance takes up too much space
- You don't want to see 2 horny main characters
- You need complex characters (more than 2 developed characters, where "complex" doesn't only mean "mentally unstable").

Just fantastic. So believable character development it was beautifully painful to live through. World-building that holds it's own (a reread might do me good to grasp some aspects better, but it's been a long time i didn't see so much thought going into the systems within a book in this category/genre). Some lines that force us to face the decisions we make in our own world. A perfected homage to the source fanfic... Oh yes a few remarks can be made but won't deter the read. It. Was. Just. Fantastic.
