Description

Legal Immigrant is Alan Cumming's collection of musings on his experiences as a US citizen, growing older, and what it feels like to be an immigrant in today's America, featuring songs and stories that are as eclectic and idiosyncratic as Alan himself. The audio, recorded live at the Minetta Lane Theatre, is a smorgasbord of genres, styles, and tales. Replete with laughter, tears and, of course, provocation, featuring covers of songs made famous by a diverse array of musical legends.

Get it. Get it.

Thank you Audible, for recording the cabaret 'Legal Immigrant' by the genius Alan Cumming. As I don't live in the USA, this is the only way I can enjoy this wonderful cabaret.
It is everything I thought it would be: smart, hilarious, thought-provoking, insightful and hopeful.

It's very interesting to hear about the situation with immigrants in America, and the bonus at the end of the show gives a better point of view of the situation for people who are not Americans, like me. It made me realize how the "American Dream" I was told about as a little girl is very different today.

I could listen to Alan Cumming talk for hours, I love his insights about life, culture and human behavior in general. And here I have 2 hours of Alan Cumming talking and singing! Ah, my heart is joyful.
A highlight for me was the song 'Caledonia', which completely melted my heart, it made me think "oh, it can't get any better than this".
But then Alan Cumming and his perfect musical band play 'Hymn to Love'.
And now my heart is full.

Too broadway

After enjoying Cumming's narration and then falling in love with his memoir, I couldn't wait to hear more from him. I was not expecting all of the singing. Of what remained after all the songs, I didn't enjoy about 1/3 of it. The rest was excellent -- but that didn't leave much.

There is a lot of singing in this “book”.

I knew this was set in a Cabaret, and that it was the recording of his performance one night, but I didn’t think half the book would be taken up by songs and relentless mentions of his band mates.

I had the impression it would be more memoir, less nightclub.

It got to the point where I stated skipping the songs. So, if you want to hear lots of singing, get it, if you are hoping for a brief memoir, skip it.

I haven’t laughed so hard in FOREVER!

I adore Alan Cumming and this does not disappoint. It IS a stage performance with singing, stories and comedy, so there are a few sight gags that the listener may only get in their imagination, but Alan paints such vivid pictures that I didn’t miss them.
Thank you!!

Absolutely Wonderful!

When I saw this on Audible I downloaded without really knowing what it was. It's Alan Cumming; of course it will be awesome. Not only does he talk about his experiences as immigrant to America, he SINGS. This his cabaret show. Funny, sometimes serious, just absolutely wonderful.

An incredible celebration of immigration

As a first generation immigrant, this spoke to me personally. I'm uses to hearing about immigration in negative or traumatic ways so to hear it done as a celebration of immigration is so refreshing. This had it all, from humorous to heartfelt and amazing music. Alan is such a charming character, I didn't want it to end. I would 100% reccomend this audio to anyone.

Lots of Music in this

I didn’t quite know what to expect with this, but I am glad I gave it a chance. I didn’t know anything about Alan Cumming so I was actually afraid he was going to rant about being a “good guy immigrant”, (legal, white, financially secure), in opposition to “bad guy immigrants” (not legal, not white, poor). Nothing could be further from where he was actually going with this. It is a celebration of diversity and the human family.

So inspirational and hilarious

This was so beautiful, witty, and touching. Thankfully I come from a family of immigrants as well. My grandmother had a dream to take her kids to America for education and financial stability. My grandfather and grandmother left their kids under the supervision of their oldest(my mother) for year. Until my grandmother had the family she work, sponsor all four children. I’m made up of many quirks and morals but being a first generation American of my Jamaican family means a lot to me. I love being a gay, black, American with a Jamaican heart. Thanks Alan!
