Description
Nothing brings two men—or one man and an ancient god—together like revenge.
Private investigator Sloane sacrificed his career in law enforcement in pursuit of his parents’ murderer. Like them, he is a follower of long-forgotten gods, practicing their magic and offering them his prayers…not that he’s ever gotten a response.
Until now.
Azaethoth the Lesser might be the patron of thieves and tricksters, but he takes care of his followers. He’s come to earth to avenge the killing of one of his favorites, and maybe charm the pants off the cute detective Fate has placed in his path. If he has his way, they’ll do much more than bring a killer to justice. In fact, he’s sure he’s found the man he’ll spend his immortal life with.
Sloane’s resolve is crumbling under Azaethoth’s surprising sweetness, and the tentacles he sometimes glimpses escaping the god’s mortal form set his imagination alight. But their investigation gets stranger and deadlier with every turn. To survive, they’ll need a little faith…and a lot of mystical firepower.

Tentacles Ahoy
Having read this in ebook form, I knew I would like it, but I didn't realize how much more I would enjoy the audio
Slight spoilers ahead
So in here we have Sloan, a poor lonely fella who is trying to find out who killed his parents. In this world, you worship these beings as gods and his parents worshipped Azaethoth the lesser and Sloan was pissed that this god did nothing to help his parents.
Anyways, Sloan goes to a party and meets a man who is later murdered. Azaethoth takes over the body and hires Sloan. Things happen and we find out that these two are mates.
There is a lot of tentacle sex and it's done well. I loved the knot the most.
John Solo did a great job here, I'm glad the sex scenes were acted out, I find that's better than a dry reading.

One of my favorites, slight narrator mismatch
This is one of my favorites! I've read the text version multiple times, and very much enjoy it. it's got a lot of heart. Admittedly, the first time I read it I didn't properly understand what I was getting into, and was just excited about a novel with an early aughts pop-song title. After that initial surprise (lol), I keep coming back to the story for the heart.
The narrative character Sloan has some pretty deep feelings about things, and the writing communicates that beautifully. And all the characters are put here doing their best (even the baddie).
Regarding the narration: Jon Solo is one of my favorites, he does a fantastic job, especially with softer spoken delivery. The only thing is....Sloan yells. Like a lot. (I mean fair, he's dealing with a lot.) Jon Solo just doesn't quite carry off yelling in his narration well, and it's a little situation breaking for me. He does an excellent job otherwise. For me personally, his narrative style is just a bit mismatched with Sloans character. If he continues with subsequent books in this series, that may work a lot better. Ted, the narrative character in book 2 for example, isn't as loud as Sloan.

So much fun
This was so h*rny! A romp. There's a tentacled god MC absolutely obsessed with the other MC, there's a mystery afoot to try and find out who murdered the MC's family, there's some monster boning, lots of tentacles, and overall, this was a fun time.
I will say, John Solo went all in with narrating this, and there's a lot of acted out explicit scenes that were a, lot? To listen to, lol. Probably a 4 star book and 2.5 star narration for me.

Never thought I’d go for tentacles
There’s a good story with heart hiding amongst ancient gods, tentacles, and silliness. I’m genuinely surprised and impressed by how much I enjoyed this audiobook. I’ll be looking for the next one.
Can tell John Solo had fun with this one. It comes through in the narration.

Fun light-hearted story
It was enjoyable, kinda silly, but in a good way. I just wish there was less talk of “spawning”. Kids are a major turn off for me, so the possible future mpreg is not something I like to think of. To me, tentacle porn and children just do not go well together.
I must applaud the narration, the voices were very distinct and the preformance was very well acted.

Tentacle LOVE!
Coming from reading the book to actually listening to the audible was an experience. I totally enjoyed Sloane and "Lach" working together on a murder case that's exciting, HOT and dangerous. John Solo did an excellent job with narration. SO glad I had the opportunity to give this first book in the series a listen Can't wait to hear more.

Creative world building…with tentacles
This book series will not be for everyone. You do have to be open minded to a different world with elements of magic and the supernatural, as well as like snarky banter, a little silliness and be ok with insta love/lust type stories. And tentacles. Don’t forget the tentacles. This one is very similar to Chloe Archer’s It’s Not Unusual, but instead of aliens, we have gods. So about those gods-I’ve seen another review of the book mention the issue of consent. Consent IS important, don’t get me wrong, but anything I’ve read or learned about the gods of old pretty much characterizes them as entitled and very used to getting what they want when they want it. So Azaethoth completely gives this vibe, and since Sloane worships these very gods, I don’t think he expects them to be any different and accepts this nature.
I admit I haven’t yet finished reading this series of books. I came to start reading K.L. Hiers from her Cold Hard Cash series and was intrigued by her other genres of books. Because of the amount of world building and then jumping right into the story on this one, I was a bit overwhelmed and didn’t continue through the series immediately. Going back and listening to this as an audiobook has actually helped me enjoy the story even more and now I’m going to reread the next books that I’ve already read and then complete the series sometime soon. I might wait for more audiobooks.
The narrator on this wasn’t my favorite but they did a good job overall.

I'm a Sucker for this series!!
Plot: An original action mystery set in a mystical world of magic and gods
Feels: Romantic and hysterical
Drama: Mystery of the past
Heat: 5/5 Super hot tentacle-ly sexy times
Characters: Both MCs are completely lovable. Loch/Azaethoth is hilarious and so sweet, just perfect for Sloane.
Pacing: Quick
Length: Medium
Ending: HFN - can’t wait for the rest of this series on audio!
Performance: John Solo was a great choice to give life to Loch and Sloane. His style of narration matched the whimsy of the story and made Sloane’s reactions super cute (especially after sexy times lol).

mischievously seductive
John Solo does an amazing job of capturing Loch's mischievous seductiveness while still sounding sincere... when Loch is sincere. And Solo's performance gives Sloan's voice that cynicism mixed with hope only heard with those who truly want to believe and have grown up.
