Description

The explosive third novel in James S.A. Corey's New York Times best-selling Expanse series. Now a major television series.

For generations, the solar system - Mars, the Moon, the Asteroid Belt - was humanity's great frontier. Until now. The alien artifact working through its program under the clouds of Venus has appeared in Uranus's orbit, where it has built a massive gate that leads to a starless dark.

Jim Holden and the crew of the Rocinante are part of a vast flotilla of scientific and military ships going out to examine the artifact. But behind the scenes, a complex plot is unfolding, with the destruction of Holden at its core. As the emissaries of the human race try to find whether the gate is an opportunity or a threat, the greatest danger is the one they brought with them.

Abaddon's Gate is a breakneck science-fiction adventure following the critically acclaimed Caliban's War.

The Expanse: Leviathan Wakes, Caliban's War, Abaddon's Gate, Cibola Burn, Nemesis Games, Babylon's Ashes, Persepolis Rising

The Expanse Short Fiction: The Butcher of Anderson, Station, Gods of Risk, The Churn, The Vital, Abyss, Strange Dogs

Critiques

"Politics, philosophical ideals, and humor mingle in a tale that will shock and surprise." (Publishers Weekly on Abaddon's Gate, starred review)

"High adventure equaling the best space opera has to offer, cutting-edge technology, and a group of unforgettable characters bring the third installment of Corey's epic space drama (after Caliban's War and Leviathan Wakes) to an action-filled close while leaving room for more stories to unfold. Perhaps one of the best tales the genre has yet to produce, this superb collaboration between fantasy author Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck should reawaken an interest in old-fashioned storytelling and cinematic pacing. Highly recommended." (Library Journal on Abaddon's Gate, starred review)

Best scifi series I've ever "read"!

This has got to be the best scifi series I've ever read. The depth and detail that the Authors put into this series really pulls you into the story. They have beautifully showed a very believable space age future for humans.

They have an elegant way of showing all sides of the human condition. The good, and the bad sides. Our compassion, and our prejudice. Our curiosity, and our blind self judgments.

I'm only three books in, but each one is getting better as they go along. Each character is so layered that I've developed a connection to them. I feel like Bastian in "Never Ending Story" huddled over the book. Screaming at the characters, hoping they succeed!

These authors belong among the greats of science fiction, like Arthur C Clarke. And this series is a must read for any true Science Fiction fan.

Who else could convincingly give you a gay Methodist priestess wearing high-tech gear in another dimension chasing down a villain to save an outlaw?

It's hard to create science fiction worlds in which the things that happened feel like they are inevitably what should happen given how the alternate world works. Corey excels at creating a feeling of consistency. I found myself nodding and saying things like oh of course, of course that's what they would do next.

The other thing that Corey is amazing at is short descriptions of people's emotions. very easy to imagine how characters come across.

Did you read the first two?

If you read the first two and enjoyed them, read this one.

If you have not read the first two, don't read this yet. Read them.

Amazing series

I absolutely love this series, and being able to have the audiobooks, I can keep up with my books I wanna read, I never have anytime to just sit down and read anymore. Still not quite as amazing as just reading a book, but it's close. 10/10

Good

Not great, but good, I'll be getting the next in the series so take that for what it's worth. It got a little slow, or hars to follow, or predictable. Not sure how to put my finger on it. Anyway, I'd recommend it, just not at the top of my list.

contrived but compelling

Corey's characters are great! The only issue is the lack of environment for them. They exist in a vacuum of some-to-be dead secondary charters.

A bit anticlimactic

I love this series. I liked this book. I really don't know how to explain my lack of love here without spoiling the book. SO don't read past this line if you don't want spoilers.

I found the character arch of Melba Alzbeta Koh both unbelievable and a little puzzling. People aren't really evil. Not wholly. That I believe. What I don't believe is the ability to admit that she was wrong. People usually find that quite difficult. To see someone try to destroy someone with single-minded determination and turn back... no. I don't think I believe that. Was the story interesting, yes. But the climax really fell flat for me. It seemed like she just kind of gave up on her own. Yes, real life isn't dramatic monologue-ing and all that. But I did feel like I wanted more. Why? Why can she think clearly now? Because of distance and killing? I'm just not lovin' it.

The thrills of The Expanse continue

This entry in The Expanse series is great. It's really cool to have a version of a once deceased character return to offer ominous portents for the future. Wonderfully performed.

Still after 3 books the saga is entertaining

The book is great, and it's a pleasant surprise that the saga is still entertaining after 3 books.

The audiobook, on the other hand is terrible, since is a single file without any chapter information, like in previous versions.
