Description

A brilliant new crime novel from the beloved, bestselling, and award-winning master of the genre - and Joe Pike's most perilous case to date.

Joe Pike didn't expect to rescue a woman that day. He went to the bank same as anyone goes to the bank, and returned to his Jeep. So when Isabel Roland, the lonely young teller who helped him, steps out of the bank on her way to lunch, Joe is on hand when two men abduct her. Joe chases them down, and the two men are arrested. But instead of putting the drama to rest, the arrests are only the beginning of the trouble for Joe and Izzy.

After posting bail, the two abductors are murdered and Izzy disappears. Pike calls on his friend, Elvis Cole, to help learn the truth. What Elvis uncovers is a twisted family story that involves corporate whistleblowing, huge amounts of cash, the Witness Relocation Program, and a long line of lies. But what of all that did Izzy know? Is she a perpetrator or a victim? And how far will Joe go to find out?

Better than his last two books, but disappointing

The good news: this is better than The Promise or The Wanted. The bad news: the female characters are so annoying I wanted them to die. For example, when Joe Pike tells one character to leave her current location immediately, because, hey, there are some bad men lurking in the neighborhood, instead of listening to him, she proceeds to argue with him for several inane minutes that she wants to stay until he arrives. The story is filled with similar bone-headed moves by the two women Joe and Elvis end up helping. Also, the plot is recycled from his other books, and doesn't feel fresh. That being said, I am glad that Crais hasn't aged Joe and Elvis, which I believe is a problem in other series I read, like Harry Bosch and Lucas Davenport. I will probably read the next book in this series, in hopes that Crais will get back on track and give us another book like L.A. Requiem or Demolition Angel.

Is it hard to find talented narrators?

I really wanted to listen to this book. And I really wanted to get used to the narrator's. But I couldn't. Every scene is described in the same suspense-building tone and cadence - one appropriate for a scene where a maiden is being tied to the railroad tracks. I'm so glad I can return this and get my credit back.

Clean Cut Crais

Like other true fans of Master Crais, I made this novel an automatic download. I own the full Elvis Cole series with all it’s different narrators. Some good, others great, and all the recordings with James Daniels are the best but must be in full length and unabridged. Now that Audible has purchased AudioBook Stands library, we may get more of the talented work of James Danials. Luke is a talented narrator as he interprets this authors intensions very well. Yes, his interpretation of Joe Pike maybe new to you if you started the series with this book, but it is spot on Pike. If you are a long time fan, and enjoyed The Watchman, my fave, L.A. Requiem, and The First Rule, then this book is a good way to enjoy more of Joe Pike as Mr. Crais has distilled the dialogue to match his Pikes persona. As with all of Mr Crais novel in this series, they are pure entertainment with no hidden agendas or social commentary. I have had the pleasure of listening to this series via cassette, CDs, MP3 and now download which is the best as I listen to all mysteries with the 1.25x speed to match an authors action. I so wish I could take back my review of Mr Crais reading of The First Rule as Robert really did a good job but you need to listen at the great 1.25x speed if you have not tried it.
Were my comments of help?

Great series, but this isn't a great book

I love the characters of Elvis Cole and Joe Pike, and they are in fine form here - Elvis gets in some wisecracks and Joe is the strong, semi-silent man of action. But the plot is just a retread of other stories in the series and the characters, apart from Elvis, Joe, and John Chen, are flat stereotypes. There is plenty of action - chases and gunfights galore - but the fun / funny / poignant / interesting characters that have made other books in this series so good, are missing. The damsel in distress, Isabel, is so annoying that I was glad to see the last of her.

I Liked it

After reading some of the reviews I wasn't expecting to like the book but I did. Pike plays the primary role to Cole in this book but that's OK with me. I enjoyed the storyline and I love Luke Daniel's narration.

Good Joe Pike Story

The novel is a good Robert Crais - Joe Pike story. Unfortunately, the narrator portrays Joe Pike as a gorilla, Elvis Cole as a normal person, all the police officers as morons, most of the southerners as ignorant hillbillies, and many of the ancillary characters such as shop owners, general citizens, and retirees as ignorant lowlifes. When I read Robert Crais novels I don’t get this general feeling of abhorrence for the general public that I get when I listen to this audio performance.

Joe Pike in Top Form

I truly enjoyed this book; it was worth the wait and I only wish it had been a bit longer.
Joe Pike is one of my favorite characters because he doesn't waste words and is all about action.
In the future I'd love to see more of some of his friends met in earlier books.

Great Book

Great book. More Pike than Cole but what you would expect from the two. Love all of the books in this series just wish they were longer!

RC still got it

I'm not sure but I think Cole and Pike are about 70 now. Gives me hope for my advanced years. Great Story Great Characters Great Action and Great Narration. Now we have to wait another year for another book. Strike ME! How old will they be then???
