Description

Audie Award Nominee, Science Fiction, 2013

Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

Not smart sci-fi

Any additional comments?

As many of the reviews show, this book appeals to many readers. Unfortunately, I'm not one of them. If you take the time to go through the many written reviews, you'll see that this book is very polarizing. Most readers either love it, or were disappointed. If you are a reader who accepts what's presented without question, regardless of its plausibility... then you'll probably really enjoy this story.
Ray Porter is a world-class narrator and Peter is a creative story teller, which gets things off to a very good start.Things start falling apart when the author needs to dig deep and intelligently pull all of the strange observations by Nate and his Scooby-do bunch; into a cohesive and compelling narrative.
Initially, we are treated to a complex historical plot-line that Nate and the bunch uncover piece-by-piece. But once the team finally unveil what's happening... the author chooses to venture into the simple and supernatural. Converting the storyline into a bad horror movie of monsters chasing likable characters who make bad decision after bad decision.

what the what???? spoiler alert...

What disappointed you about 14?

I thought that the ending could have been much better... I almost felt the the writer started writing this book with no clear vision as to where it was going to go, then got backed into a corner when he finally had to reveal what the building was all about, panicked, and created a totally contrived unbelievable ending. Not only was the ending poorly created, the character development of a key character was not flushed out properly, and it just seemed lazy on the part of the author. (It felt as though the author thought it was just easier to kill off said character instead of explain him) This book started out promising, but ended VERY poorly, I felt it was a waste of my time! So my advice is do not waste yours with this book!

This is McDonalds

Have you ever seen Jim Gaffigan's "Mr. Universe" stand-up special? This book is McDonalds.

It's not particularly well written, nor particularly clever, but it includes all the tropes it needs to in order to appeal to as wide an audience as possible.

So bored

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Im not sure I will finish this book. I only have 3 hours left but, I just dont care. The Scooby-Doo jokes might be funny if they werent actually acting like a bunch of "nosey kids" from that show, that is about the depth of the characters here. This far into the book I should care what happens but I just dont.
I do love this narrator though. I think he is why I hung in as long as I did.

Has 14 turned you off from other books in this genre?

No. But no more from this Author for sure!

What about Ray Porter’s performance did you like?

His voice lends itself well to sarcasm and humor. I have listened to him in other, better, books so, it was familiar.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

bored. disappointed. Annoyed at how obvious certain things were, how shallow others were.

Any additional comments?

I would return it but, I feel like I do that too often, I made a choice, Im going to live with it.

dumbest book I have read in a long time

I couldn't finish the book. The character development was so onerous and unnecessary to the plot line which was really dumb.

Not as impressed...

My review of this book is more of a comparison between 14 and The Fold. These two books have a nearly identical plot, with the same concepts, story progression, and even enemy characters. However they differ in their premises and settings, and of course main characters. It seems that once the author wrote 14, he just repeated it in The Fold; however The Fold was a MUCH more interesting and exciting story. I would not waist time reading both books, but I highly recommend The Fold, over 14.

Poor Story

Find it very hard to believe this story has received so much attention and so many good reviews.

The plot drags slowly, uninterestingly to the "climatic" conclusion. Character development is horrible and boring. So many logical fallacies it's hard to get through. Lastly the ending that the whole story builds up to falls flat with no real conclusions to many details of the story.

Suffice to say there are much better novels out there.

The only saving grace is Ray Porter's performance which is always great.

Not my thing...

The story was great until halfway through the book when it took a strange turn. Like when I turn on a movie and get interested until suddenly appears some supernatural unreal balongna and I turn the channel. I still finished the book because the performance was really good. I'm sure lots of people will love the book if they are into alternate universes with aliens/monsters etc.

Super solid listen!!

I'm sure I can't say here anything that hasn't already been said, however I was so impressed, I felt like I had to. I also don't want to reveal anything, because the minimal knowledge I had before listening made the unfolding of the story so much more fun! This was such a solid listen on all fronts. The characters were engaging, the story interesting, the source of the mystery was terrific. By the time it had ended I wanted to hear more!
The absolute best thing, though, was the narrator. If there were some way I could give Ray Porter more than 5 stars, I'd give him an enthusiastic 10! His accents were credible, pronunciation:impeccable, and timing and flow: spot on! The thing I loved the most is that his interpretation never got in the way of the story he was telling. I've never found a narrator, aside from Jim Dale, I felt I would gush about - Ray Porter is gush-worthy!

I'd skip it.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I did not like it enough to suggest it to a friend.

Would you be willing to try another book from Peter Clines? Why or why not?

I might be willing to give another one a try, but based on this I would not seek another one.

Did Ray Porter do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

I liked the character representations, but his reading threw me off at times. Sounded a bit like William Shattner as Captain Kirk, but a little less extreme. I can't be the only person to pick up on the weird short pauses.

Do you think 14 needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

3/4 of the book was like relationship building qand exploring and then the final 1/4 was like a quick blast of information.Felt rushed at the end, but i wouldn't need a follow up book.

An Interesting Take on Lovecraftian Mystery

At the core of 14 lies a great idea. I won't spoil the fun by revealing the mystery. Around its ingenious framework the execution is mostly well done, but sometimes feels a bit flat. The characters are a little too innocent, and a bit too witty in their banter. However, I personally did not find the witticisms so jarring that they failed their job of lightening the mood and increasing my investment in the characters. I would recommend this to any fans of the lovecraftian horror/mystery structure of a "big reveal" tale.

As for the reading; Ray Porter does a very solid job of narrating Clines' story and giving each character a unique voice. My only complaints are that he overdid with the accent of a female protagonist and sometimes, the most random times, sounded like he "zoned out" for a few seconds and was listing words, rather than reading a story. However, these are minor complaints, and I prefer his slightly inconsistant, yet dynamic style to the grim monotone of some horror recordings.

2nd time through

It's ... an unusual book. Yes it's filled with murder, gore and plottwists. But it's although heavy on the realistic side of the characters daily lifes. You follow the main character for a few months of his life. His move into a new Apartment. His braindead work, the after work beers on the weekend. Yet it's still mostly a mystery detective story. Clues are found and waited to be solved. A loose group is forming around our main char. And step by step between workshifts it goes deep down the rabbithole.

As you can tell I love the book. Fell in love with the characters and details. Its slow pace is relaxing for me. But still really entertaining. Looking forward to my future readings of this outstanding piece of art!
