Audie Award Nominee, Science Fiction, 2013

Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

Great Start, but couldn't finish

What did you like best about 14? What did you like least?

This book has a very good beginning, it grabs you and runs for about half the book. Then it starts to become tedious and I tried to finish but just reached a point where I didn't care what happens to this group.

Has 14 turned you off from other books in this genre?

No

Could you see 14 being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

No

Any additional comments?

The story line is easy to get caught up in, but very quickly the characters become predictable and not necessarily likable. There are way too many times where I asked myself would I do this or could I do this, to many places where the fantasy becomes just a bit to fantastical, how can a person hang onto a doorframe and not be sucked out into space? among others. This group of "friends" make amazing discoveries that could destroy the planet, do they ever stop and say hey maybe this is out of our league and we shouldn't turn this knob? No. The cartoon reference is apt, they are saturday morning kids tv.
Maybe this book ends well but I frankly just couldn't get myself there, I even tried speeding up the rate of the playback but just didn't care enough to finish.

Took way too long...

Any additional comments?

I wish the book would have taken off sooner... 2 hours left of the audio before any real action began. And then it still was a quick climax and ending.

Couldn't even finish!

I liked the characters in this book and it seemed okay for the first half. At some point this book went berserk and became WAY too Sci Fi for my taste. Just not my cup of tea and gave up somewhere in the second half.

Super solid listen!!

I'm sure I can't say here anything that hasn't already been said, however I was so impressed, I felt like I had to. I also don't want to reveal anything, because the minimal knowledge I had before listening made the unfolding of the story so much more fun! This was such a solid listen on all fronts. The characters were engaging, the story interesting, the source of the mystery was terrific. By the time it had ended I wanted to hear more!
The absolute best thing, though, was the narrator. If there were some way I could give Ray Porter more than 5 stars, I'd give him an enthusiastic 10! His accents were credible, pronunciation:impeccable, and timing and flow: spot on! The thing I loved the most is that his interpretation never got in the way of the story he was telling. I've never found a narrator, aside from Jim Dale, I felt I would gush about - Ray Porter is gush-worthy!

Overrated

I purchased this audiobook based on the glowing reviews. I seem to be in the minority, but I did not really enjoy the novel. The core premise of the book is intriguing: A man moves into an apartment complex and soon starts noticing something strange is going on. While investigating, he builds relationships with his neighbors and together they work to solve the mysteries of their building. I was hooked by the central mystery, and stuck with the book entirely because I wanted answers. The book delivers those, and went in unexpected directions, but the author's writing style kept me from enjoying the book. The pacing throughout the first half was incredibly slow, which would have been fine if the characters were interesting, but I never cared for any of them. As such even though the stakes were raised and crazy things were happening throughout the big, I was never invested in any of it.

I had tried to read Peter Clines' previous book 'Ex-Heroes' and quit after the first hour because I really didn't care for the dialogue or the characters. If you liked that book, or if the other reviews posted here make the book sound great, by all means give it a shot. It definitely wasn't for me though.

Meh

This book had potential but as soon as I learned what was behind apartment 14 (no spoilers) the story lost my interest. I’m glad I listen to the entire book before buying the next one in the series. What a let down.
Performance/ Reader was excellent and you can identify with all the characters. Love the Scooby Doo references.
I had high hopes for this book !

meh....

I don't like the narrator much. he talks like a valley girl. I could see the book being better if I read it myself. but the book was kind of dull too.

Not what I expected....

I read the reviews about this book and they seemed so good, but I have to say I was quite disappointed. It took me a little while to get used to Ray's narration, as I found he spoke too quickly, but I got used to it by the end. However, by the time I actually got to the end the story was so unreal and uninspiring I was counting down minutes for it to finish. The beginning was interesting, and so was the journey the characters took on their mission of discovery, but once they opened number 14, it all kind of went downhill in my mind. It was not all bad though, despite my initial dislike of the narration, I did find that Ray did a great job with the characters - each had such a distinct personality, and he managed to pull if off very well.

HOW STRANGE!

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Initially I was really into the story line of this book, then it just turned strange. I was so upset that I'd spent hours waiting for THAT! Not to give anything away but the author took something so promising and just made it weird.

What could Peter Clines have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

The premise of the book was good up until the left turn, then it was just BAD.

What aspect of Ray Porter’s performance would you have changed?

The reader did a good job.

Could you see 14 being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

Yes with a different ending.

Any additional comments?

I read the reviews and trusted the other listeners. I even recommended the book to my husband who now thinks I'm a certified fruit loop. I'm not allowed to recommend anything to him until I've finished listening first.

An Interesting Take on Lovecraftian Mystery

At the core of 14 lies a great idea. I won't spoil the fun by revealing the mystery. Around its ingenious framework the execution is mostly well done, but sometimes feels a bit flat. The characters are a little too innocent, and a bit too witty in their banter. However, I personally did not find the witticisms so jarring that they failed their job of lightening the mood and increasing my investment in the characters. I would recommend this to any fans of the lovecraftian horror/mystery structure of a "big reveal" tale.

As for the reading; Ray Porter does a very solid job of narrating Clines' story and giving each character a unique voice. My only complaints are that he overdid with the accent of a female protagonist and sometimes, the most random times, sounded like he "zoned out" for a few seconds and was listing words, rather than reading a story. However, these are minor complaints, and I prefer his slightly inconsistant, yet dynamic style to the grim monotone of some horror recordings.
