Audie Award Nominee, Science Fiction, 2013

Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

There Could Have Been Fourteen Better Endings

Would you try another book from Peter Clines and/or Ray Porter?

I don't think so.

What do you think your next listen will be?

I am going to go back to the Beautiful Creatures series and read book 2.

Which character – as performed by Ray Porter – was your favorite?

Xela

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Yes - out of curiosity.

Any additional comments?

This book held my attention the whole way through and was very intriguing. However, I was very disappointed with the ending. The cause of the strange apartment building was too far out there for me.

Awful finish

What would have made 14 better?

the last 25% of the book is awful, it started very good but making it finish like a bad hollywood movie is very disappointing

What do you think your next listen will be?

deadline

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

the story at the begining is very interesting

Not quite what I expected

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I thought that the book was pretty random. The first half was about exploring a apartment building. It could have been cut in half, i barely made it this far before turning it off. The second half of the book just gets weird and and is pretty much all over the place in the story line. I could have lived without listening to this book although I do have to admit that the author does well with his descriptions and so on. I just wasnt impressed with how the plot progressed.

Unfortunate turn of events

The first half of the book is great, quirky characters, good story, great reader. The second half takes a turn into a horror story, and gets as far-fetched as the other dimension the characters land in. It's so off course, it sounds like it was written by a different author, no more humor, fun, or quirkiness. The reader is great but he can't save a story that goes so wrong.

Great Start, but couldn't finish

What did you like best about 14? What did you like least?

This book has a very good beginning, it grabs you and runs for about half the book. Then it starts to become tedious and I tried to finish but just reached a point where I didn't care what happens to this group.

Has 14 turned you off from other books in this genre?

No

Could you see 14 being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

No

Any additional comments?

The story line is easy to get caught up in, but very quickly the characters become predictable and not necessarily likable. There are way too many times where I asked myself would I do this or could I do this, to many places where the fantasy becomes just a bit to fantastical, how can a person hang onto a doorframe and not be sucked out into space? among others. This group of "friends" make amazing discoveries that could destroy the planet, do they ever stop and say hey maybe this is out of our league and we shouldn't turn this knob? No. The cartoon reference is apt, they are saturday morning kids tv.
Maybe this book ends well but I frankly just couldn't get myself there, I even tried speeding up the rate of the playback but just didn't care enough to finish.

Eh...

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I found the story monotonous and slow. A majority of the book is spent in over detailing descriptions. When the action finally does show up, it's the last 30 minutes and then the book ends.

What could Peter Clines have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

More action.

What about Ray Porter’s performance did you like?

Ray Porter was probably the only reason i continued to listen. His take on each character was fabulous and drove the story on, even when there wasn't much to drive on.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

It has the surprise ending, but i feel like the author needed a way to end the book and kind of just threw it in.

huh

Would you try another book from Peter Clines and/or Ray Porter?

This book was a huge disappointment. The plot lacked interest. The story moved at a very s l o w pace and the characters were predictable and one dimensional. I would not recommend precious credits on this ... sorry.

Has 14 turned you off from other books in this genre?

no

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

ummm...what just happened???

the fold was decent enough.
had hoped for more of the same with this book.
sadly, it goes wayyyyyy off the deep end at a point and just falls apart in my opinion.
i enjoy a good sci-fi/horror/Stephen Kingish book as much as the next guy.
however, the characters were simply unbelievable to the point that I'm shaking my head wondering why I'm even finishing the book.
SPOILER ALERT- don't read past here if you want to check this book out...
when this fantastical house "flips" to the other side, a tad more realism with characters would have helped a ton!
riding a bicycle in an alternate universe? sounds ridiculous.
while the storyv tired up nicely at the end, thatis to say, it didn't leave you hanging, the plot was a disaster. a whole scene of opening a door that leads into outer space, sounds cool i know! bit played out So badly that i skipped 30 seconds at a time to get the feel for it But not to suffer through it all.
so much more to say, bit if your reading this you already know ha...

hard left turn

This story was entertaining at first and then took a hard left turn. The 2 main female characters are so concerned with the male's perceptions of them that it tends to be very distracting and annoying. The main character, Nate, is very bland and is put into a position of leadership purely by the author's laziness. The best characters are the side characters, specifically Ted and Veek (not sure of the spelling). These two characters actually feel like living beings who were given personalities.
I felt like this story needed more work. It was a slow start and then the last 15-20 chapters we finally (kind of) understand what's going on, and then the story takes a quick left turn. In the end I asked myself "wtf just happened here?!" the buildup to the climax was slow and in my opinion not worth the wait.
I feel like a lot of things were left unresolved. There is room for a sequel although I would have no interest in reading it. This book felt like it might be well suited as a YA story. It definitely could be fleshed out a bit more.

An Interesting Take on Lovecraftian Mystery

At the core of 14 lies a great idea. I won't spoil the fun by revealing the mystery. Around its ingenious framework the execution is mostly well done, but sometimes feels a bit flat. The characters are a little too innocent, and a bit too witty in their banter. However, I personally did not find the witticisms so jarring that they failed their job of lightening the mood and increasing my investment in the characters. I would recommend this to any fans of the lovecraftian horror/mystery structure of a "big reveal" tale.

As for the reading; Ray Porter does a very solid job of narrating Clines' story and giving each character a unique voice. My only complaints are that he overdid with the accent of a female protagonist and sometimes, the most random times, sounded like he "zoned out" for a few seconds and was listing words, rather than reading a story. However, these are minor complaints, and I prefer his slightly inconsistant, yet dynamic style to the grim monotone of some horror recordings.
