America’s government was on the verge of collapse, and her geopolitical foes smelled blood. While the country was destroyed from within, China deals a final blow. It was time to bring the United States to its knees. Thrust into a world without power, complete lawlessness took over. There was no organized police force. The National Guardsmen had abandoned their posts to protect their own. Anarchy filled the void.

All life depends on the sun’s rays. The sunlight promotes life. Plants need light to grow. Animals need plants to survive. The power of the sun was the key to the delicate balance of Earth’s ecosystem. However, as the Earth’s atmosphere was changed by the aftermath of nuclear war, everything its human inhabitants thought they understood about survival was obsolete. They had to evolve with the catastrophic effects of nuclear winter.

The skies darkened and the temperatures dropped. Intense firestorms spread across the Earth at each point where the bombs detonated. Fallen trees and homes had become the perfect kindling. Oil and natural gas reserves together with coal seams and peat bogs smoldered for many months. From the initial firestorm and the spread of smoke to the destruction of the Earth's ecosystem, all living things were beginning to perish.

With the threats brought to their doorstep, the neighbors behind the gates face a dilemma. Do they try to make peace with those who've threatened their very existence if they don't pay a King's ransom in food and supplies? Or, do they stand their ground and fight back in an effort to protect their property and themselves. Old, festering animosity within the neighborhood rises to the surface as two distinct factions are in complete disagreement as to the best course of action. Will the two groups be able to put their differences aside?

Nobody was prepared, including the world’s governments. The damage to humanity through loss of life was predictable, yet unfathomable. As nuclear winter spread across the globe, a rapidly cooling climate shocked humanity and many living things to their death. Nuclear Armageddon had become reality and ordinary people were paying the price. In a world without power, the exchange of information was virtually non-existent. A battle for resources was waged, pitting friend against friend and friend against foe. For the Bartlett family, their days on Swan’s Island were untenable.

The Bartlett family had to make an incomprehensible decision. The age old question, should we stay or should we go? The answer lay many thousands of miles from home on the opposite side of the Earth. The journey was filled with perils, and the last port of call may not be as welcoming as they hoped.
