In ages past, so the histories tell us, our ancestors were ruled wisely and well by the Six Masters and their Courts – aided in their task by the magical Shards of Stone that bestowed power upon their holders. Today few Shards remain. The land has fallen into disrepair and lawlessness with the people reverting to a feudal existence, governed by the Brotherhood of Serenity which controls the remaining Shards and their magics with ruthless jealousy.
