There is some disagreement as to their quality, and some claim that Conan Doyle was writing more experimentally, rather than to the conventional Sherlock Holmes formula. Not all the stories are narrated by the faithful Watson, and the stories are regarded as the darkest of the Holmes canon, with some unusual villains.

A mysterious lodger in his own building who remains locked away and is very secretive, causes fear and agitation in his landlady who brings her concern to him. At first reluctant to get involved in such a petty matter, he is persuaded at last and proceeds to unravel a mystery that spans the Atlantic and involves a secret Italian society of murderers and blackmailers. These lesser known stories were penned by Conan Doyle during the period between killing off Sherlock Holmes in 1893 and reluctantly resurrecting him some ten years later. The swashbuckling, eponymous hero, Etienne Gerard, is one of Napoleon's gallant French Hussars, who considers himself the finest of them all.
