John Brown was an American abolitionist who believed the only way to emancipate the slaves was via violent revolution. Early in October 1859, Brown and a group of his followers seized an armory in Harper’s Ferry, Virginia, with a plan to use the armaments to further their cause. Brown was captured and, two months later, was sentenced to death. John E. Brown (April 2, 1879 - February 12, 1957) was a prominent Methodist evangelist, publisher, radio pioneer, and educator in the first half of the 20th century. In 1919, he established John Brown University, one of Arkansas' leading private universities, to provide an interdenominational Christian education for needy students.
