Just as Theo is about to turn thirteen, everything he knows is turned upside down. At the stroke of midnight, he awaits his Apto—the animal guide meant to mark his future as an Archemist. The whole gang from Peabody: Scruggs, Penny, Annette, Jack, and Jean, board a flight for a vacation in New England with Aunt Betty and Uncle Bill. But they find themselves abandoned in a strange, seemingly endless forest in the mountains. With very little food and no gear, they must keep moving as they try to figure out who has left them here, and who is following them, and what they want.

He was a treeborn, and if you saw him you would think, “My, isn’t he a gangly little fellow! All arms and legs like branches on a tree. But oh! He does smell lovely, doesn’t he? Like Christmas.
