The Western Maryland, Garret family, struggle to maintain their farm as their neighbors argue the slavery issue. They live in a border state where folks take both sides and emotions run hot. Their stoic matriarch, known only as "Mother" holds the family together in the absence of her dead husband. The deceased patriarch, Valentine, was a giant of a man both in stature and character. He acts as the family conscience and mentor throughout the novel. It is his admonition that people who get snakebit think and act crazy which is how he viewed the state of the country when he died.

Only in Florida: An eastern diamondback rattlesnake appears in the middle of a crowded downtown nightclub, sending one victim to the emergency room. Maddy Finnegan, single mother and Orlando Police detective, is tasked with figuring out the crime. Days later, the stakes escalate to murder, after several western diamondbacks show up in a local synagogue, one sinking its fangs into the neck of a young worshipper.

John LaRue was professor of herpetology at Louisiana State University when a green anaconda wrapped around him one night at John's previous research place. The LSU professor was rescued by Jacob Gigue, his assistant. Both were guarding the Atchafalaya River Basin from constrictor snakes transported from the Everglades of Florida by a narcissistic criminal parading within academic circles as an international scientist.

Jennifer and Jonathan, a showbiz couple, leave their ailing daughter in New York City to come to Hollywood, so Jonathan can audition for a film. And when Jennifer stays with her old friend Michael, a dancer turned social worker, past sins shed new light on the present in the age of AIDS.
