Rachel Griffin should be having an amazing freshman year. She has the princess of Magical Australia and crazy orphan Sigfried the Dragonslayer for friends and a handsome sorcerer boyfriend romancing her with charms magical and otherwise. But otherworldly forces conspire against those she loves.

Sneaking out for a quick boat ride on a summer day, five children find themselves engulfed in a curtain of dense, powerful fog that transports them from the rocky Maine coast to the mysterious island of Ayda. Rescued by Seaborne, a machete-toting wayfarer of few words, the children suddenly find themselves at the center of a centuries-old battle between Dankar, the ruler of Exor, and three siblings that rule the other realms of Ayda.

There was an old mansion surrounded by a marshy ditch with a drawbridge which was but seldom let down: not all guests are good people. Under the roof were loopholes to shoot through, and to pour down boiling water or even molten lead on the enemy, should he approach. Inside the house the rooms were very high and had ceilings of beams, and that was very useful considering the great deal of smoke which rose up from the chimney fire where the large, damp logs of wood smoldered.

Max is just an ordinary, slightly scruffy boy, until he burps, and that’s when he turns into a huge monster, with teeth like swords, who can jump over buildings, roar loudly and eat whole dustbins. It's great being a monster whose aim is to 'protect and do good stuff' until Max sneezes...and when he does, he turns back into a boy again, often far from home and dressed only in his pants. But his arch enemy, Peregrine, a boy his age has invented a POOP (Portable Operating Omni Prison) machine to catch Monster Max and put him in a zoo.
