Salt and Soil – Beginnings is a tale of love, set in the aftermath of the Napoleonic wars, as two people come together to share their lives, in order to meet the demands and pleasures of their adjoining West Country estates.

As Montrealer Catherine Day sets foot in a remote fishing village and starts asking around about her birth mother, the body of a woman dredges up in a fisherman's nets. Not just any woman, though: Marie Garant, an elusive, nomadic sailor and unbridled beauty who once tied many a man's heart in knots. Detective Sergeant Joaquin Morales, newly drafted to the area from the suburbs of Montreal, barely has time to unpack his suitcase before he's thrown into the deep end of the investigation.

This is a story set in war-torn Okinawa - back in the final days of the Pacific Campaign of World War II. The story is told from the point of view of a young Kamikaze pilot preparing to fly his fighter plane into the side of an American battleship. It is a story of guilt, loneliness, memory, and the taste of the sea. Oh, and there's a sea monster as well. I expect I ought to mention that...
