Thursday, July 16, 1953. It's just another Thursday morning in July of 1953 when the doorbell rings at 137, Hartford Street, and it's bad news. Carter's father has been murdered in Georgia, and the local sheriff has no intention of finding out who really did it. So, Nick and Carter borrow the first plane that Marnie, Nick's amazing secretary, can find for them, and they zoom off back into the past to see if they can uncover the truth of what really happened before the wrong man is convicted.

Private Investigator Nick Nowak is back in two novella length mysteries set in Chicago during the early 1980s. In Little Boy Boom, Nick's car explodes when a thief attempts to steal it. Realizing the bomb was meant for him, Nick sets out to discover who wants him dead only to find that the list of possible suspects is longer than he'd like. When he begins to run out of suspects he wonders if the bomb was truly meant for him.

While out looking for illegal trotlines, Jackson and Sawyer find the body of a man by a campsite, dead from an apparent shotgun blast to the chest. After a brief investigation and the arrest of a notorious Head Rock Harbor resident, Chief Bucksworth is happy to close the investigation. However, Detective Jeremy Morrison isn't so sure that his boss has the town's best interests at heart.
