Eight-year-old Owen may not be able to speak, but he has a voice in ways no one expects. Born with cerebral palsy, he dreams of building a toy boat from the wood of a tree struck by lightning, believing it will carry a special kind of magic. With the help of his family and friends, he creates a small but mighty vessel—one destined for adventure. As the boat, named O, begins its journey down the river, something incredible happens: O can think, speak, and share his thoughts with Owen through a magical telepathic bond.

While walking along the beach one day, Isobel and Nicholas discover a strange-looking wreck. As they begin to put it together, they find it is a peculiar sort of sailing boat. They clamber in and so begins their great adventure. Aided by a wounded stork, they sail through the sky encountering scenes of despair and devastation and set about righting some of the wrongs in the world.
