      Vegetables are not only healthy, they are also an important part of a sustainable diet. In view of changing eating habits, their economic importance is growing worldwide. Reason enough for KWS to diversify its portfolio and enter the long-term growth market for vegetable seeds: In 2019, the company announced the acquisition of the Dutch breeding company Pop Vriend, the market leader in spinach, and began the long-term, organic development of a new Business Unit with various crops. How do you develop a new business from scratch? How does vegetable breeding differ from other segments in which KWS is active? And what traits are particularly important to customers along the value chain? We discuss these and other questions with our experts Simon Walter, Head of Business Unit Vegetables, and Coert Engels, Global Head of Breeding Vegetables.       Der Klimawandel wird nicht nur kommen, er findet längst statt. Der IPCC geht bis zum Jahr 2100 von einem mittleren globalen Temperaturanstieg zwischen 1,8 und 4,0 Grad Celsius aus. Schon jetzt häufen sich die Meldungen über Temperaturen von über 40 Grad im April in Spanien, trockene Flusstäler und Talsperren in Frankreich, Überflutungen in Italien. Die Landwirtschaft kann einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Begrenzung des Klimawandels leisten, gleichzeitig ist sie von dessen Auswirkungen im hohen Maße direkt betroffen, denken wir an mögliche Ernteverluste und damit die verfügbare Menge, den Preis, aber auch die Qualität unserer Nahrung. Wie werden unsere Nutzpflanzen, Obst, Gemüse, das Klima der Zukunft verkraften? Wie kann man ihre Widerstandsfähigkeit stärken? Oder müssen wir in der Landwirtschaft umdenken und ganz andere Produkte anbauen? Darüber reden wir jetzt im Podcast „World of Farming“ und haben dazu zwei sehr versierte und erfahrene Gäste aus den Bereichen Züchtung und Produktentwicklung bei KWS zu Gast. Dr. Milena Ouzunova ist seit Ende der 90er Jahre bei KWS tätig. Seit 2009 ist sie als „Leiterin Angewandte Züchtungstechnologien für Mais und Ölfrüchte“ für ein Team aus 60 Forscherinnen und Forschern verantwortlich. Harold Verstegen verfügt über 20 Jahre Erfahrung in verschiedenen, internationalen Führungspositionen in der Life Science Industrie. Seit 2021 leitet er die Globale Produktentwicklung für Zuckerrüben, Getreide, Sonderkulturen und Ökosaatgut bei KWS.
