After a devastating car crash left twenty three year old Andrea with a diffuse axonal injury, a hypoxic brain injury, and a locked in presentation, her family was told that meaningful recovery was unlikely. She could not move, speak, or respond to the world around her for nearly twenty months. Yet her husband never stopped fighting for her.

In this episode of Unraveling the Brain, Dr. Josh Madsen sits down with Andrea’s husband, Caleb, to share the emotional and clinical story behind one of the most severe traumatic brain injury cases we have worked with. Together they walk through the moment of the crash, the long hospital journey, the early days of locked in syndrome, and the first signs of neurological change that began during her month of intensive care at Infinity Neuromotor Development Center.

Andrea has started showing early improvements that many believed were impossible. Her pupils are responding to light. Her eye movements are beginning to return. She is starting to show small but meaningful head and facial movements. Her circulation has improved and the purple discoloration in her legs has resolved. Her tone is loosening, her pain is decreasing, and her gut function has dramatically improved after metabolic and digestive testing. These changes may look small to someone who has never lived with severe brain injury, but to a family in this situation they represent real and measurable hope.
