À propos de ce contenu audio

This episode investigates the famous Wow! Signal, a mysterious burst of radio energy detected by Ohio State University’s Big Ear Radio Telescope on August 15, 1977. Lasting just 72 seconds, the signal was exceptionally strong, extremely narrow-band, and broadcast at the precise frequency associated with hydrogen—the most abundant element in the universe and a logical “universal channel.” Astronomer Jerry Ehman circled the spike of data on a printout and wrote “Wow!” in the margin, giving the signal its legendary name. Despite repeated attempts to locate it again, the Wow! Signal has never been detected a second time. Scientists have debated its origin for decades. Natural explanations—such as comets, planets, or distant stars—fail to fully match the signal’s characteristics. Human-made interference is also unlikely due to Big Ear’s dual-receiver system, which would have detected Earth-based transmissions in both channels. That leaves the most tantalizing possibility: the signal may have been produced by intelligent life, whether as a deliberate beacon or an accidental technological leak. Without repetition, however, the mystery remains unsolved and purely speculative. To this day, the Wow! Signal stands as one of the most intriguing hints that humanity might not be alone— a single whisper from the cosmos that has yet to be answered.
