    Apr 14 2026

Welcome to The Weekly Top 3 — our look at the top 3 things on our mind here at Alaskans for Sustainable Budgets — for the week of April 13, 2026.

This week, our top 3 issues are these: 1) we explain why the way the legislative R’s are handling the PFD debate is a certain loser, and consider whether that is, in fact, their goal (2:10), 2) we explain why we believe SJR 29, the proposed Constitutional amendment to establish a constitutionally dedicated education fund, will create a giant sucking sound within the Alaska budget if enacted(19:52), and 3) we examine who exactly it is the Legislature is trying to protect from paying taxes (39:47).

The Weekly Top 3 is a regular weekly segment on The Michael Dukes Show. The Show broadcasts on Facebook and YouTubeLive as well as via streaming audio from the Show’s website weekdays from 6–8am. We join Michael weekly in the first hour of Tuesday’s show, from 6:25–7am, for a discussion between the two of us about our three issues.

This week, our top 3 issues are these: 1) we discuss the absolute hypocrisy being exhibited on all sides during the recent debates on the PFD issue in the House Finance Committee (2:14), 2) we discuss the issues we see with SJR 29, the proposed Constitutional amendment to establish a constitutionally dedicated education fund (20:25), and 3) we examine an extremely interesting and, we think, important presentation made last week in the House Resources Committee by Gaffney Cline, the legislature’s consultant on the AKLNG project (39:48).

This week, our top 3 issues are these: 1) we explain why the projected FY27 oil revenue windfall seems to be burning a hole in legislators’ pockets (2:16), 2) we explain why SB274, the Senate Finance Committee’s proposed reduction of the POMV draw percentage, is addressing the wrong problem with the Permanent Fund (19:41), and 3) we explain that while the Administration and the AKLNG project have provided many numbers, they have failed to provide those necessary to explain why the proposed volumetric property tax rate is good for Alaskans (40:08).

This week, our top 3 issues are these: 1) we discuss the ongoing debate in the House over the funding source for the FY26 Supplemental (1:54), 2) we explain how, yet again, the House Majority is attempting to Orwellianize the term “fiscally responsible” (16:03), and 3) we discuss the issues involved in the competing LNG import projects (32:19).

This week, our top 3 issues are these: 1) we explain how SB 274 — the Senate Finance Committee’s proposal to reduce the level of the annual POMV draw from the Permanent Fund — is applying the wrong lesson taken from the performance of the Permanent Fund Corporation (2:18), 2) we discuss whether the market dynamics behind the #AKLNG project have changed as a result of the effects of the military operation in Iran (19:24), and 3) we explain why the legislature should ignore the oil price derived from the Spring Revenue Forecast when setting the FY27 budget and instead use the rolling 10-year average price (38:41).

Welcome to The Weekly Top 3 — our look at the top 3 things on our mind here at Alaskans for Sustainable Budgets — for the week of March 2, 2026.

This week, our top 3 issues are these: 1) we explain why the Legislature should use the rolling 10-year average oil price in preparing the FY27 budget, rather than whatever will come from the snapshot of the current futures market being taken this month in the midst of what’s happening in the Middle East (2:26), 2) we review two slides included in Permanent Fund Corporation advisor Callan’s presentation last week which undermine both the claim that the PFC is doing “well” compared to its peers, and that even a 4% POMV draw rate adequately protects the Permanent Fund corpus (17:35), and 3) we discuss why a distributional analysis of who pays under any given revenue approach is critical to both the legislative process and the long-term well being of both Alaska families and the Alaska economy (39:10).

    Feb 24 2026

Welcome to The Weekly Top 3 — our look at the top 3 things on our mind here at Alaskans for Sustainable Budgets — for the week of February 23, 2026.

This week, our top 3 issues are these: 1) we discuss the action taken by Senate Resources this past week on oil taxes and why we think its performative and unserious (2:17), 2) we explain how Rep. Galvin’s proposed income tax becomes very regressive — indeed, much more than the Governor’s proposed sales tax — when coupled with the additional steps required to close the full deficit (17:54), and 3) we explore why some seem to discard alternatives to PFD cuts even when, by raising susbstantial amounts from non-Alaskans, using the alternatives would leave much more money in the pockets of Alaska families and the Alaska economy (34:54).
