  • 93. A Mother Who Refused to Give Up on Her Son’s Addiction
    Feb 2 2026

When Kathy Wrenn’s son became addicted, she refused to accept helplessness.

Instead of giving up, she got educated, built structure, and changed how her family responded.

Kathy Wrenn is a mother from Richmond, Virginia whose son struggled with addiction. While many parents are told they “can’t control it” and are handed catchphrases about “tough love,” Kathy took a different path. She asked a different question:

“What can I do?” In this episode, Kathy shares:

    • What she changed in the family system

    • Why she questioned common addiction advice

    • How she got her husband on the same page

    • What structure looks like in real life

    • What families get wrong when they think “support” means “rescue”

Today, her son has been sober nearly 8 years, and Kathy now helps other families through a support structure she operates in the Richmond area. She was also recently featured in a documentary highlighting family recovery.

This conversation is about education, leadership, and refusing to stay powerless when someone you love is struggling with addiction.

  • 90.INSIDE THE MIND OF A CHRONIC RELAPSER- JESSE EARWOOD, COO OF BURNING TREE PROGRAMS
    Jan 26 2026

This episode breaks down the mindset of the chronic relapser and what it actually takes to reach someone who seems unwilling or unable to stay sober.

Sam Davis sits down with Jesse Earwood, now COO of Burning Tree Programs, who once lived that exact cycle himself. Jesse shares his personal journey from repeated relapse to long-term recovery, and what finally changed.

    Together, they unpack:

    • Why chronic relapsers don’t respond to traditional treatment

    • The thinking patterns that keep people stuck

    • The difference between wanting sobriety and being willing to change

    • What families misunderstand about repeated relapse

    • Why long-term, progress-based care is often necessary

    • What it really takes to help someone who is “reluctant to recover”

This is a must-watch for families who feel like they’ve “tried everything” and professionals working with treatment-resistant cases.

  • 87. CRIMINAL HISTORY CAN PREVENT PEOPLE IN RECOVERY FROM GAINFUL EMPLOYMENT
    Jan 19 2026

Melissa Brown works in behavioral health leadership and has firsthand experience with a major issue most families don’t even know exists:

In Virginia, “barrier crimes” can prevent someone with a criminal record from working in direct care roles inside behavioral health and addiction treatment — even when that person is stable in recovery and qualified to serve.

And here’s the reality: Some of the most effective people helping addicted individuals today are people who’ve lived it. Recovery often comes with a checkered past — but these laws can permanently block people from the very work that helps others heal.

In this episode we talk about:

    • What Virginia “barrier crimes” are

    • Why these restrictions limit the treatment workforce

    • How this system can unintentionally hurt recovery outcomes

    • Second chances vs. public safety

    • What families, providers, and policymakers should be thinking about
