Fumes is the story of a fine arts painter who has serious doubts about the value of her work. In fact, the only person who buys her work is an older man with whom she has sex, and with whom she claims to be in love. She wants to believe in her work and her self-established mission to make less lonely the people who view her work, but her own actions undermine her. She is beset by obstacles in her life in the form of her roommate and her lover, and her own inner demons. She’s an artist who is true to her vision, and has high ideals, but lacks the audience necessary for her work to be self-sustaining--and to convince her that her art matters. 

When she decides she can no longer string along the one person who buys her work she, in a state of depression, stops painting. That’s when she finds out the truth about her work and the people around her.
