  • Why I am a standards-maker | Harry Pangli
    Feb 12 2026

Standards affect all of us every day, everywhere. By defining good practice, they help people and organizations do things better. For all sorts of things, from nanotechnology to Net Zero guidance.

And these standards are made by standards-makers – tens of thousands of people from around the world - who get together to agree good practice to the way things are made and done. All helping to make life easier, safer, and more enjoyable.

In this episode, Matthew speaks with Harry Pangli, a Chartered Architectural Technologist and Architect with over 20 years’ experience across UK domestic, residential, commercial, and industrial projects. Since 2018, Harry has specialised in construction disputes and now works at Expert Architect Limited as a forensic architect and expert witness.

Harry represents the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists on various BSI committees, and chairs BSI committee B/209 on general design and construction standards, helping shape standards across the built environment.

Harry shares his motivations for getting and staying involved in standards, the impact standards-making has had on his career, and his advice to anyone considering getting involved in standards.

  • BS 30417 | Provision of inclusive PPE
    Jan 13 2026

Personal protective equipment, or PPE, has faced challenges in fitting a diverse workforce – research shows that 36% of women in the UK and 45% of women globally are supplied PPE that doesn’t fit properly.

Poorly fitting PPE isn’t just uncomfortable – in sectors like construction, healthcare, and policing, it can create serious safety risks, reduce job satisfaction, and even drive skilled workers from industries already experiencing labour shortages.

BS 30417, the new standard for inclusive PPE, provides practical guidance to ensure all employees are properly protected, regardless of gender, ethnicity, body shape, age, or disability.

In this episode, we hear from key voices at the Westminster launch of BS 30417, including MPs, industry leaders, and the standards-makers themselves, discussing how the standard enhances safety, inclusivity, and workforce well-being. Guests also share insights on its development, practical applications, and how organizations are preparing to implement it.

  • BS 30480 | Suicide and the workplace
    Dec 11 2025

Suicide affects every part of society, with around 6,000 deaths in the UK each year and one in four adults having contemplated it, leaving hundreds impacted by each loss. BS 30480 addresses this by providing the UK’s first workplace standard on suicide prevention, offering practical guidance to help organizations recognize risk, respond safely, and create supportive, stigma-free environments.

In this episode, Matthew speaks to Jamie Compton Rea, Chief Operating Officer at the National Centre for Suicide Prevention Education and Training (NCSPET) and standards-maker involved in the development of BS 30480. They discuss why BS 30480 is a landmark standard, Jamie’s role in its development, and the steps organizations should take in their first 100 days of putting the standard into practice.

Since it’s The Standards Show, Jamie also reflects on his own standards journey – what motivated him to get involved, and what continues to inspire his involvement today.

  • ISO 22002 food safety series | "The Magnificent Seven"
    Nov 11 2025

Global food safety relies on clear, practical standards. The ISO 22002 series - aka “The Magnificent Seven” – helps organizations manage contamination, fraud, and hygiene risks, ensuring consistent quality across food, feed, and packaging sectors.

In this episode, Matthew speaks to Richard Leathers, Amanda McCarthy, and Angela Cunningham, three of the standards-makers behind the series. They discuss how the seven standards, including updates and new parts for retail, wholesale, and the universal supply-chain foundation, help organizations put ISO 22000 Prerequisite Programmes (PRPs) into practice efficiently and consistently.

Since it’s The Standards Show, Richard, Amanda, and Angela also reflect on their own standards journeys - what motivated them to get involved, and what continues to inspire their involvement today.
