  • Creative Business Strategy & An Exciting Announcement!
    Mar 8 2025
Join Nate and me on the Pop-up Podcast at HUNT & GATHER for Season Two, Episode One, as we discuss annual goal setting. Be sure to listen until the very end of the episode when we share some exciting news! But first, we reflect on last year's goals and set new goals for 2025. This is the same process we use to lead our community of Artists and Makers through the Creative Business Strategy Sessions we host each year in January. We then host follow-up sessions each season for a chance to meet up with fellow artists and hold one another accountable. Join us for an upcoming session. CREATIVE BUSINESS STRATEGY SESSION + MIXER 2025 DATES:Spring: Wed Apr 16, 2025Summer: Wed Jul 23, 2025Fall: Wed Oct 15, 2025When it comes to setting goals, the key is focus. As creatives, we’re full of ideas, but learning to strengthen our focus muscle is essential. One way to do this is by keeping a running list—like a Google Doc—where you regularly capture ideas instead of acting on them immediately. When it’s time to plan, you can revisit your list and prioritize what truly matters. This is exactly why we host Creative Business Strategy Sessions at HUNT & GATHER each quarter. Our first session of the year is all about setting priorities, and the following three are for tracking progress, gaining accountability, and adjusting as needed…At the start of the year, we begin with a brain dump—getting all our ideas out, refining our list, and narrowing it down to our top 10 priorities for the coming months or years. From there, we rank them by urgency and identify our top three priorities. If you’re struggling to decide, ask yourself:Which goals will have the biggest impact on my life and business?Do certain goals need to happen first to unlock others? Now, for some exciting news… We have a HOTLINE! That’s right—you can now call or text us anytime at 415-545-8814 with your questions, ideas, or even jokes! We’ll feature them in upcoming episodes, making it easier to create more content and engage with you all. The more you participate, the more episodes we’ll produce. This is perfectly aligned with my long-term goal of leaving social media. So, let’s see where this goes! We’ll include the Hotline number in the show notes. Give the hotline a call and let us know what you think about our new hotline. If you’d like to share your top three goals for 2025, we’ll share them in the next episode!OK, so to recap…Here’s my recipe for success, built on five key ingredients:Goal Prioritization - Narrow it down to your top three goalsProgress Reflection - What worked, what didn't workAccountability - Do you have an accountability partner?Connection - Connecting with fellow creatives regularlyRituals - Creating regular planning, reflection, and accountability routines This is exactly what our Creative Business Strategy Session + Mixer includes- ALL 5 INREGDIENTS. Connecting with other Creatives on a similar journey is more important than ever before with everything that is going on in the world. We’ve got to stay connected and make a conscious effort to come together live and in person regularly. —so mark your calendar!📅 Next session: Wednesday, April 16th, 6-8 PM (doors open at 5:30)And don’t miss our spring season opening!🌿 BOTANICA opens Friday, March 21st, alongside the Spring Equinox Inner Sunset Art Walk. • From Lab Coat to Clay: Liz Bloomfield’s Career Transformation
    May 17 2024
We sat down with Liz Bloomfield, an SF native who loves to sculpt clay works inspired by nature and biology. Once a science nerd, Liz followed her instinct and passion and made a total career U-turn when she quit working to return to school full-time at San Francisco’s community college and explore art. While at CCSF, she discovered and fell in love with clay as her medium of choice. Today, she creates beautiful organic sculptures and 3D pottery wall hangings that mimic nature, such as ocean organisms and sea creatures. “She riffs off of organic forms and textures found in the surroundings on long walks along shores, deserts, alpine mountains, and slot canyons. She enjoys ceramic exploration and experimentation, and the making process plays a large role in the overall feeling of each piece. She creates for the joy of it, and from a deep appreciation for the pure beauty and curiosities of nature.” This episode is full of gems. Liz has wisdom beyond her years. Get inspired and take away some practical advice and smart, simple tips and tools for creating a successful art career in San Francisco. • New Year Goal Setting Recipe
    Jan 24 2024
In this episode, my new accountability buddy and I address our creative community and encourage them to join us each quarter in 2024 for in-person quarterly workshops geared at keeping them on track with their goals throughout the year. If you aren't local to San Francisco, think about starting your own group! I believe that the recipe for success is a combination of these key ingredients: Goal prioritizingAccountabilityConnecting to a community of other creatives on a regular basisHaving rituals or routines in place for getting it all done GOAL PRIORITIZING Goal prioritizing is the first step to setting yourself up for success. Write out a list of goals and do a brain dump so that all your goals are on the page. Then, circle your ten best ideas and prioritize them in order of importance and urgency. Once you have that list in order, take a look at your top three goals and write those goals on a separate page in order of priority so that you know what your #1 goal for the year is. A common mistake people make when goal setting and creating a plan of execution is not knowing what to prioritize. Start with the end in mind. At the end of the year, what accomplishment will have the greatest impact on your life and business? Knowing your #1 goal will help you work toward your goals each week, quarter, and year. ACCOUNTABILITY Set yourself up with a system for built-in accountability. You can do this in several ways, such as hiring a coach, getting a mentor, working with a team, community, or group, or working with a partner or buddy. We suggest working with a partner or buddy whom you can connect with once a week via phone, text, zoom, or in person. Figure out what frequency and communication type works for you. We also suggest joining us for our quarterly Creative Business Strategy Session Mixers, which is a two-for-one action because you'll be connecting to a community of other creatives, which is the next point we're touching on. CONNECTING TO A COMMUNITY OF OTHER CREATIVES ON A REGULAR BASIS You can join a meet-up, attend networking groups, or join us each quarter for our Creative Business Strategy Session Mixers! The possibilities are endless, and the benefits are huge. When you are trying to progress in your creative business alone, it can get lonely and feel isolating. Connecting with a community on a similar journey is more fun and rewarding and brings new opportunities, collaborations, problem-solving, and feedback. If you are local to San Francisco, we hope you will join us for our next Creative Business Strategy Session + Mixer on March 13th. HAVING RITUALS OR ROUTINES IN PLACE FOR GETTING IT ALL DONE Our quarterly Creative Business Strategy Session Mixers are a perfect example of a ritual designed to keep our community on track with goal planning, accountability, and connection. Set yourself up for success with planned-in-advance rituals or routines for weekly, quarterly, and/or yearly accountability, connection, and goal setting. Weekly planning has changed my life, and I greatly advocate this ritual. Each Friday at 4 pm, I plan the following week. When I am calendaring my tasks for the week, I always keep my top three goals and my #1 goal in mind. Be sure to prioritize your goals because when you know what the priority is at any given moment, you have clarity; it will affect how you strategize and execute the plan. Remember to start with the end in mind, and don't let yourself get stuck in the messy middle. The growth happens in the messy middle when you push through. Accountability, Connection, and Rituals will help you push through. You got this! • ROOTED + LAYERED Artist Interview Series #3 w/ Quiltmaker Catherine Sherman―spreading hope, conversation + healing through art
    Oct 31 2023
Episode Three of the ROOTED + LAYERED Artist Interview Series features local quiltmaker Catherine Sherman. HUNT & GATHER is a seasonal art gallery, pop-up shop, and design studio in the Inner Sunset District of San Francisco. We host four art shows per year, and this fall, we bring you ROOTED + LAYERED, an abstract collection of work exploring the layers and depth of our imagination through shapes and colors found in nature and the world around us. Curated by me, DeeDee Hunt, this show features seven local artists. Our guest on today's episode is Catherine Sherman, who is making the world a better place, one piece of fabric at a time. Catherine Sherman is a quiltmaker, conceptual artist, and teaching artist who uses her art to spread hope, inspire conversation, and promote healing. She says her quilts are like time capsules, vessels for stories that move through time and place. She personifies fabric in such a way she's like the Fabric Whisperer. She even practices an ancient ritual of tearing fabric as a grieving practice and recommends we all try it. Whether you are familiar with the art of quiltmaking or not, this is an episode you don't want to miss. Nate and I have a new understanding and appreciation for the fascinating world of quiltmaking.
