This is the second of two podcasts from CLES, exploring both the provenance and prospects of community wealth building in the UK.

It covers the moment we’re in – with commentary from CLES’s incoming and outgoing CEOs, Sarah Longlands and Neil McInroy – before taking a deeper look at the incremental changes that local governments can employ, to turn the dial to create economic, social and environmental justice for their place.

This new podcast from CLES tells the story of the conceptual and practical origins of community wealth building, through the voices of thinkers and practitioners, from Clackmannanshire to Cleveland. The first two episodes to be released in the coming months, part two will explore the moment we are now in for local economic development, how that relates to community wealth building and the on-the-ground processes that are incrementally turning the dial towards system change.

On this special podcast, we are sharing J. Phillip Thompson’s keynote address from our Community Wealth-Building Summit in November 2020. Phillip is the Deputy Mayor for Strategic Policy Initiatives in New York City and the author of Double Trouble: Black Mayors, Black Communities, and the Call for a Deep Democracy.

Phillip explains his thoughts on the recent US election, the huge racial divides that are running rampant in the country, his plans for NewYork City and campaigns for community wealth building, requesting that retiring business owners sell their companies to their staff, rebuilding the post-COVID economy in a more equitable fashion, the failings of the current economic system in NYC, building an economy that suits the workers and communities across the US, and more.
