This month’s Sisters in Service episode arrives right on schedule — the third week of every month — where we pause to look at the lives of ordinary women who loved the Lord and served Him with whatever they had. Some lived centuries ago, some lived in recent history, but all of them remind us that God has always used willing hearts.

For February, our theme is “Poured Out for His Purpose,” and the life of Betty Scott Stam paints that picture with heartbreaking clarity and breathtaking faith. Born to missionary parents and called to serve from a young age, Betty lived with her hands open — surrendering her plans, her comforts, and ultimately her life to the One she trusted completely.

In this episode, we walk through her story: her early calling, her marriage to fellow missionary John Stam, the birth of their baby girl, the rising dangers in China, and the courage she carried into the final hours of her life. From the outside, her story looks like tragedy. But through the lens of Romans 8:28, we see a God who weaves purpose through every thread — even the ones we would never choose.

Betty’s life wasn’t long, but it was poured out. And her obedience still bears fruit nearly a century later.

In this season opener, I'm sharing the story behind the name The Buttermilk Pie Podcast and the heart behind this new season-encouraging women in the Lord through simple, honest truths. I’m sharing my plans for February, the themes we’ll walk through each week, and a re‑introduction to my “why” — encouraging women in the Lord.

I talk about the first time I ever made a buttermilk pie, even though I hated buttermilk and was sure it would taste terrible. But curiosity (and the joy I saw in others) nudged me to try it. To my surprise, it was the easiest recipe I’d ever made… and absolutely delicious. That little pie became a picture of the Gospel for me: we often assume the things of the Lord are too hard, too sour, or too full of rules — until we finally “taste and see” that He is good. Salvation is simple, sweet, and far better than we expect.

I also share a personal piece of my story: the traumatic birth of my son, and how the Lord gave me Romans 8:28 in the middle of it. He took the good, the bad, the sweet, and the sour, placed them in the heat of trial, and brought something beautiful out of it — something only He could do.
