  • Is eTIMS really about bringing informal businesses into the tax bracket, OR forcing compliant businesses to pay more taxes?
    Feb 23 2026

KRA recently announced that expense claims made by businesses must be accompanied by eTIMS invoices, otherwise they won't be tax deductible. The government has sold this as a move to force taxpayers to be tax compliant, and to bring informal businesses into the tax bracket.

Is this true though? Will it bring more businesses into compliance, or is it making it so hard for compliant businesses to claim expenses, forcing them to pay more taxes? Is it true that only taxpayers who make returns pay taxes? Is it true that Kenya's informal sector doesn't pay taxes?

Is it true that salaried folk make better voting choices because they feel "more pain" from bad governance? In this brief episode, Kellie weighs in on the eTIMS issue, and the over-taxed citizen's responsibility insofar as tax and governance are concerned.
