When Captain Jean-Luc Picard learns Data has malfunctioned and taken a Starfleet-Son'a team hostage, he directs the Enterprise to the planet Ba'ku to help his friend. Once there, Starfleet Vice Admiral Matthew Dougherty and Son'a Commander Ru'afo tell Picard they plan to destroy Data, but Picard implores them to let him find the android first. After Picard rescues Data, he gathers more information and realizes there are holes in Dougherty and Ru'afo's story. When the Enterprise crew returns to Ba'ku, they discover what's really going on and find themselves trying to stop a major conspiracy to take over this planet and steal its mysterious resources.
