    In May 1996, 19-year-old Kristin Smart vanished after a party near Cal Poly [citation:7]. Flores, the prime suspect, sat for two interrogations that year [citation:1]. He claimed she walked away fine, but witnesses said she was incapacitated [citation:7]. He also changed his story about his black eye, first blaming basketball, then a car accident [citation:9]. Investigators told him, "Are we gonna go away? Not in your wildest dreams" [citation:4]. Flores was finally convicted of first-degree murder in 2022 and sentenced to 25 years to life [citation:9].
