The Story of a Poor Father and The Son

The son grows up knowing that he lives in a poor family. He just accepted that he came from a poor family. In each family, the head of the house is the father, whom every child looks up to as a role model. The son saw the father goes to work every day, six days a week at a restaurant as a Chief. The best memory of his life was when his father comes home late with lobsters and a 5-course meal from the Chinese restaurant he worked.

As the son grow older and finish school, he started working and start to receive a salary. Nothing fancy, a salary just as any basic entry level job. It was just simply a $40,000 salary in the year of 2010. After working a few years, the son has met a wonderful girl friend. It was through this girlfriend that they immersed in personal development and their quest for a better life.

While the son and the girlfriend wanted to try living together before getting married, like what most modern couples do, they started looking for a place to live. It was challenging and rent were expensive and the young couple want to save money to purchase a home. Luckily, the father’s next-door neighbor has a basement apartment for rent, for a monthly rent of $750. It was an awesome place for the young couple.

After living next to his father for a year, he notices that his father will leave the house a few nights a week after coming home late working at a restaurant. He wonders why he’d leave home after working a 12-hour shift at a restaurant. The son was busy all his life studying and working part-time jobs to notice this for many years. Finally, it was revealed to him by his mother that the father goes to the Casino regular to gamble. It must have been the winning nights when we got lobster dinners.

After working a few years, the son managed to saved up enough money with the girlfriend, then happily married wife, to purchase their first home. It was a blissful experience. They were on a progress, debt repayment program to pay off the mortgage just like most young family. However, after a few years, they learned that they can refinanced their home and purchase additional investment properties. So, they did just that. After ten years of working, saving money, refinancing and purchasing investment properties, they managed to purchase a few investments home.

The son did not have millions of dollars in the bank account but never did he have issue with money or was never lack of money to meet his living expenses and to provide for his children. While the father is constantly in need to money and are short in paying bills on a regular basis. Together, the son and the wife, raise 2 beautiful girls and living in a moderate, comfortable home and never have any worries of lack of money.

Guess what is the earning of the son is? Even thought, the son’s earning increased over the years, he learned that he was earning roughly the same amount of money as his father working as a Chief for many years. This is the greatest lesson of his life. Learning from the poor father of not what to do.

I don’t know if you have experience something similar, but I have. Sometime, the best thing to do is to accept what is fact. But don’t let that deter you or become an excuse of following the foot step of a father figure that can lead you down the wrong path. Thank God for self-help books and many role models that are available through books and audio programs.

    May 10 2023
I think there is no single way of investing, but we have to think of the macro economy when it comes to investing. Investing in Real Estate is no different. There are different skill sets involved as well. Let's have a listen to this episode and disect pre-construction.
