In this episode of No Counts Given, we break down the legal battle between USASF and Open Championship Series over branding, ownership, legacy, and control in the All Star cheer and dance industry. USASF says it is protecting the prestige and consumer recognition of The Cheerleading Worlds and The Dance Worlds. Open says USASF is trying to claim a word that has been used across the competition industry for decades.

This case is bigger than trademark law. It raises real questions about power, access, nonprofit structure, membership-funded organizations, and who gets to define the highest stage in our sport. The Eleventh Circuit did not rule that USASF owns “Worlds,” but it did say the fight is not over and a jury may need to decide whether the All Star community connects that word specifically to USASF. So what is this really about: protecting a legacy, controlling opportunity, or both? Let’s talk about it.
